First elk 1977.
« on: June 16, 2007, 04:13:29 PM »
Thought I would share some pics of my first successful elk hunt.  My hunting mentor had large fingers and couldn't hold the camera level when pressing the shutter button.  I, in turn, cut his head off.
This was during a late season hunt near Gardner, Montana.  It was the only elk I saw and I used a 6.5X55 swedish mauser.  Very cold, maybe around zero.  We pulled it through a creek before we loaded in the truck and when we got home it was stuck to the bed.  These hunts north of the park were sometimes easy and sometimes hard, but we always knew the elk were up there somewhere.
After I got four antlerless elk, I wanted antlers and would always apply for the either-sex permit, so I never drew again.
