Seeing a guys post yesterday with a picture of his first buck made me think of all the memories associated with mine.

I was 16 and hunting with my friend in the 101. I had been hunting for four years and my friend for three. All the previous years hunting with my father we had never been able to capitalize or see anyone even get a deer (boy how the tides have changed for the better). Just before dusk, an hour and a half away from our vehicle; we spotted a buck, and long story short... I was able to down my first 3-point muley. Neither of us had ever seen an animal gutted in person, and darkness was fast approaching... so after a minute of panicking we did a very marginal gutting job and took off running with our prize. After getting down to the vehicle about 8 p.m. in the pitch black we reached our next predicament; after hunting unsuccessfully as long as we had and losing some hope, we were driving around my friends mom's Oldsmobile Cutlass assuming we wouldn't be getting a deer that season either. After debating for a minute whether to make the hour and a half round trip to get my Dad's truck from him, we decided the luggage rack was probably more than strong enough.

Now I know that with all the political incorrectness of hunting, this probably was not a good move. But not one car passed us in the 45 minute glory ride home. And had anyone seen our jalopy with my first deer tied to the trunk, and our huge smiles intact; I'm sure they would have chuckled and gave us a high-five (101 that time of year consists of hunters and locals that could care less as many of you know). Ever since that I have had a truck. Sorry for the blurriness of the picture.

Many years ago coming back from eastern washington into Mill Creek with a buck on top of a yellow convertible volkswagen bug.  Times were good back then.

I have to ask... What did mom think about her car and the deer carcass?

My first hunt was so long ago we were still taking black and white photos... sigh... I think I may have a few early hunt photos somewhere. Might need to scan them though.

Wish i had pics of my first deer. Drug it out of a clear cut down a gravel forest road for a mile... I was scrubbing gravel out of that deer for hours...

that thread of the first buck you were talking about was mine, glad i inspired  awesome story, that buck in my thread was shot right before dark also, and i gutted it in pitch black dark, we forgot to bring a flashlight, then had to drag him about 3 miles out, in the pitch dark, in wolf/cougar country (grew up in idaho), covered in fresh buck blood, a little worrisome to say the least lol

WDFW: I have only ever got one deer down a mountain that didn't have a few bald spots. Luckily that season we came across a tough lady with a horse who turned out to be friends with my Aunt. Bald spots and gravel make for better war stories.

A few years ago we were returning from a group doe hunt with 4 does strapped to the top of a suburban.  As we would drive by families in their cars the kids would all look and point.  The parents would cover the kids eyes.  I got a big kick out of their reactions.

Several years ago we had a guy in our camp get a doe (his first) and after packing all his gear into his litle VW Rabbit, had no room left, so he sat it up in his front seat w/ the seat belt and the head hanging out the window, looked just like a big, funny looking dog. 
P.S. it had been hung and skinned up to the neck and wrapped in "game Bag" so all you really saw were the neck and head.

Love the Story, the Pictures are Classic.  I remember my buddies first buck. we drove from wenatchee to seattle  with a 5x4 on the top of a 94 ford explorer . It was a new car and he did'nt want to get blood inside the car so it rode on the roof. we did put a tarp over it as much as we could but for some reason the rack was left uncoverd.
 got to love the hunting stories .

 30 - 40 (or more)years ago this was the rule, not the exception. we had a female governor then too (smart woman unlike the current).  Construction sites would almost evacuate in October/ November for hunting seasons. the Washington State Department of Fish and Game didn't have its head up it's @$$  looking for money! I am so thankful that my father was so into hunting and the family and friends went often!Fishing not so much.
