I watched a raghorn come out of the timber and make a "B' line through a clear cut, stop at a pretty big tree left in the clear cut, look around and run to the deep timber. It was the funniest thing to watch the 4 rigs on the upper road trying to get into position to try and get a shot.

Love hunting that unit but it is getting harder and harder to huntit. There is a ton of reprod, and a road every half mile. And seams like it is as bust as Modern season anymore. Saying that, i will still be in there hunting it. But man over the last 5 years the people driving the roads have doubled.

I quit hunting it several years ago for that reason. Tons of elk.But legal bulls are very hard to come by during the late season. There were  many days i would see 4 or 5 herds of elk with lots of cows and spikes but 0 branched antler bulls.

Also Bobs in Longview has a couple different maps for that area.

Very typical wetside unit...Inpenetrable creek bottoms and lots of reprod. Elk are there but tough to find branched bulls.

I've hunted it the last 2 years in late ML.  I am done, goin archery now.  There are more roads in the 550 than anywhere else I have ever been.  Theres lots of elk and lots of small legal bulls but its just not worth it.  You can't get away from the roads, everywhere you hike to get away just leads to another road.

the way i like to hunt that unit is glass clear cuts at first and last light and then make short hunts trhough patches of timber where the elk like to hang out. the good part is that the elk are always near a road too. everyone just drives right by the elk all day.  :dunno:

My buddies and I have killed a lot of bulls in that unit, you just gotta know how to hunt them. The best map in my opinion is the tree farm map. They usually have it at Bob's in Longview. Good luck, there are a lot of legal bulls in the unit. I've called in as many as 12 bulls in a single day in that unit, just tough to get the shot you need.

Arnolds Map Service in Vancouver is where I get all of my maps. I was in elk everyday last year in the Coweeman and took a nice 4 x 4. There are sheet ton of roads but there are lots of elk too.
