Permit question Dayton area wdfw messup?
« on: May 14, 2011, 02:39:24 PM »
Alright so looking at making Permit app choices I see a new unit for elk, ten ten. But looking at the elk area onset map it looks like ten ten includes all elk areas 1011 and 1012 which mAke up 1010... Is that right? So no permit is given for just 1011 or 1012? And next how does that differ from just applying for Dayton tags (I know the 1010 tag also includes gmu 163) I'm just confused on our wonderful  wdfw and their borders and permits..... Any insight would be appreciated.   :bash:

Elk Area 1010 is five separate sections in Dayton GMU 162 (green lines on my map.).

Elk areas 1011 and 1012 are enclosed with 1010.

GMU 163 is Marengo and is the north of GMU 162 (red line on my map.)

Ok so if I did understand that right, why would wdfw put two different elk units but combine them as 1 tag? Seems stupid to me ....

Touché..... But what do I expect, trying to figure out the why behind wdfw is like trying to figure out why some "trophy hunters" are the same guys that drive endless roads but never get out of the truck

I read in here that those permits that are on private propery are given out in lew of the owners filing claims with the state for elk damage.  They are not supposed to charge you, and I would think that letting you hunt there property would go along with the deal.  But I've been wrong before.

I think you will be suprised at how much of the land you will be able to look at and that's it! Many farmers will take the damage from the elk before letting a stranger ( west sider! how they see most anymore ) on the land  :twocents:

1010 is just the Marengo unit and Dayton unit minus the National Forest part of the Dayton unit.  So it's basically a private land hunt with a couple token sections of state land thrown in to let you feel like you have a place to go.  Great hunt if you have relatives with land there.

Actually, they divided the number of Dayton tags in half and gave half to the 'Ten Ten' elk area.  (at least the archery tags)  So, with only two quality elk choices instead of putting in for two units some will now put in for Dayton and Ten Ten and use both choices for the same 14 (archery) tags.  Last year they would have put in for say, Dayton and Tucannon.  So, If you are putting in for Tucannon, I would guess that they're are fewer applicants for that unit, because some chose both Dayton and 1010.
