Peeled Cedar Tree
« on: May 15, 2011, 09:25:12 PM »
I checked one of my trail cameras Friday, and it had only taken a couple pictures, and they were of nothing. It's a cheap Tasco and so far I haven't gotten any pictures of game with it. It's not really in a great spot but there were fresh deer tracks on the trail it was set up on. It didn't help that the batteries were dead and probably had been for a couple weeks. Anyway, only about 10 feet behind the camera was a freshly peeled cedar tree. I'm not sure I've ever seen a cedar tree peeled by a bear, so I had to take a few pictures. Just wish I would've got a picture of the bear that did it, as it had to have walked right by my camera.

I cruise timber, so im in the woods a lot.

Bears are funny. Some spots they peel only Cedars. Some spots only Hemlocks, or only Doug Fir. My theory is all bears get a taste for what they like and all bears are individuals.

Some bears only peel butts of trees and some like to climb way up and peel the tree.

Sap flow is late this year and I have yet to see my first peel of the year. It's gotta be really close though...

I can second what True said.  Seems different bears go for different species.  Attached is a big cedar peel up in Kapowsin last summer.
