I don't remember specifics, but I do remember that in particular the antlerless elk hunts started 3-4 days after the general elk opener.  This was in the early 80's, certainly.  Bull tags didn't have this requirement since it was pre-spike only days.  Eastern, here of course.
And yes, there also used to be a 2 year application wait on cow tags.  Get drawn, wait 1 or 2 years to apply again.  Again, in the early 80's and Eastern.
I believe all this went away sometime near the time it went to spike only, but I certainly could be wrong here.

OK, yes I remember the deal if you drew certain tags your hunt didn't start for 2 or 3 days after generals season.

I have never heard of this 3 day rule either and I have been applying for special permits since the early 90's.
-You must not have applied then becouse thats the way it was! From 91 till 96 if you applied for special Elk permits you couldnt hunt till wednesday.

prior to 1996 if you applied for permits you had to wait to Wednesday after the hunt started to hunt.
If you drew you got to hunt your permit season.

And ifyou drew you had to wait 2 years to apply again.

I wish we had that back. No points and so much easier to draw a tag.

I must have been breaking the law then cuz I applied for tags and hunted general season from day one when not drawn.  You sure you don't mean that if you drew a tag your hunt didn't start until a couple days after the general opener?

Maybe it was a west side thing?   :dunno:

I wish we had that back. No points and so much easier to draw a tag.

Also pre '96 you had to choose between 5 areas in the state.  which I believe the eastside should be again it should be split into the Northeast, Yakima, and Blue mountains.  This would improve the drawing odds if those who wanted to hunt general season bulls in the Northeast they could not apply for permits in the blues or yakima areas.
"Shoot the spike".  It's much easier to pack out!

Pretty sure it was that way for east side too.

I don't think so.  There is a possibility that I am wrong though.  It has happened once before.

If I get a chance this weekend I'll dig out some of the old regulations and check it out. I do believe people who applied for a cow elk permit could not hunt until the Wednesday after the general bull elk season opened, on Saturday. And I'm thinking of the east side. I'm not even sure about the Westside, because back then I didn't pay much attention the westside elk hunting.

I guess I never applied for an elk tag until spike only and those were only for branched bull tags.  I guess this makes the 2nd time I'm wrong.   :chuckle:
