I am back from my Idaho moose hunting trip.  I've spent the last couple days unpacking (I packed for a 14 day hunt and it only took 3 days), taking care of my moose and spending time with my good friends who all took the time to come experience my moose hunt.  And oh what a hunt it was.

First of all I would like to thank everyone on here who helped me out with information on my hunting area.  Special thanks to two of you that told me of all the moose sightings that you had over the summer/fall.  As some of you know I made 7 different scouting trips over to Unit 6 since the middle of July.  I spent 14 days or partial days scouting for moose.  I saw about 10 moose over the scouting trips with only 3 bulls and no shooters.  My trail cameras were picking up some moose on them, but not in the numers that I thought they would.  I knew this hunt was going to be slim pickins and that I had better cover ground and stay mobile if I was going to find a moose.  When I talked to the biologist about areas that had better moose numbers - he told me that the unit is a low density moose unit.  They are throughout the unit but there arent really any areas that he thought were better.  I thought - boy, he was a big help.

I was starting to feel that this unit wasn't all it was cracked up to be.  I put out trail cameras in 3 different areas all 25 miles apart.  They weren't picking up any moose that I would call a shooter moose.  After going all summer without seeing a bull moose that I would like to shoot, I was a little frustrated.  I knew that it was going to be a long hunt if I was to have any chance of harvesting a decent bull, and I was going to need a little luck to fall my way.  I had put in my time scouting and felt that hopefully I was making my own luck.  I lowered my standards from the high expectations of that 50 inch double brow bull that I had when I drew my tag.  I decided that I would hold out for a 40 inch or better bull for the first week.  The second week I would harvest anything in the mid 30's.

I left about noon on Sept 30 to set up moose camp.  By the time we got a 2 week supply of wood cut and split and everything set up, it was too late to do any scouting.  I had a pretty good idea of where I wanted to start out.  It was an old cut that a friend found some sheds in this spring.  I had seen fresh tracks there every scouting trip.

Opening morning was Oct 1 and we headed out of camp early to get to a glassing area at daylight.  First spot I stopped to glass I spotted a bull 900 yards across the drainage.  We looked him over in the spotting scope and took some video of him making a rut pit, pissin in it and laying down in it.  First time I had ever seen that.  He had split brows on both sides.  His paddles were a little weak, and I guessed his spread at about 35 inches.  He wasn't a bull I wanted opening morning 10 minutes in but it was sure neat to watch.  Turned out that was the only bull I would see that day.

I like suspense, but am really hating people who type THIS slowly.  Better be in the 50" range after all this torture.

Now where'd HUNT go?

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

He's sitting back watching the "fun" he created.  He's sitting in his recliner, feet up, drinking an adult beverage laughing his butt off.  He's gonna wait until that point right before everyone is ready to string him up.  Then he'll post a couple of more dinky teaser paragraphs and laugh some more.  This cycle will keep repeating itself until he gets bored or the Mrs puts him to work on the honey-do.  Hopefully it's the honey-do because he'll use us as an excuse to get out of working.  "Sorry honey, gotta post the story and pics of my hunt for the guys, I'll get to _________ (insert task here) as soon as I'm done."
