My old man and I are looking into booking a moose hunt to Alaska for the 2012 season. My grandfather and my dad had always wanted/dreamed of going on a moose hunt together but never got the chance before my Grandpa passed away. It will be a very special hunt for my old man and me because it is something that is very high on his bucket list. Do you guys have any recommendations on good outfitters to go with or places to do research on them? We are looking for a hunt that we fly in on a little puddle jumper and hunt on foot in the back country. Thanks guys!

Considering this is much more than a hunt I would research your outfitters with the older hunters in mind. If you pull it off it will offer memories and time spent that will be greater than any moose you can kill. Good luck and keep us posted. I really dig the ongoing threads regarding upcoming hunts and the results.

I totally agree. We went on an elk hunt last fall and it was amazing and the memories will last a life time. On this hunt, I just want to be there to share it with my old man and it would be icing on the cake if I could be standing next to him when he takes a nice bull because I know that my Grandpa will be with us every step of the way!

I might have to start walking everywhere and giving blood, sperm, maybe donate some organs if I want to go on this hunt. I knew they would be expensive but anywhere from $15k-$20k per person for a hunt is tough to swallow.

That's why I have never done an Alaska moose hunt. Very expensive. And I think (some guys on here are more familiar with the laws up there-so correct me if I am wrong), they just passed some law restricting how out-of-staters can hunt moose (something like you have to be so far away from a waterway if you hunt without a guide

- or something like that..), so DIY is kind of out of the question too.
That's why I am looking into a DIY Caribou hunt instead. Still an expensive proposition...

My dream is to do a 10 day to 2 week float trip with my two boys along the southern Brooks Range and hunt moose and caribou and fish. Fly in, drop and float, fly out. Check these out. No references from me but I came across them while doing research.

I have read that they are changing the rules for do it yourself hunts and the restrictions and requirements that you must follow. Being that we have never moose hunted, we want to go with a guide which adds to the $ but is worth it in my eyes because this will most likely be a once in a lifetime hunt for us.

I went fishing up there last July, Wild Rose Charters.
The tags(in area) for out of state was $400 and change. He has cabins, and would help im sure. Call and see what he can do for you. Around Clam Gultch area, N of Homer.

I have checked into this before and a DIY hunt would not be to expensive. I have heard that you can rent cabins that the state owns for not very much. You would have to rent a bush plane to drop you off. I think it would make it a very cool trip. Alot more work to put into than hiring a guide but it should be very memerable trip

Alot of those cabins that are owned by the state you reserve them in Georgia. A DIY hunt is very doable. I was statined there and did 5 of them. Was succesful on four of them. Best thing when doing your research is find the high ground and be able to glass. I have one area we took 3 moose from it in 3 years Only about a 2 mile hike in from a road. And all we did is brought some books and a good set of binos. Best of luck to you

Have you considered Ontario? You can do a very successful fly in hunt up there for a fraction of the price. Me and my buddy have it calculated at about $4300/person. That includes the flight into the backcountry camp, guide,tag, meals, and lodging. The tags are OTC. I looked at Alaska for a long time and its gonna be 15K no matter what. The other thing that caught my eye was the fact that we can drive there in a day and half, which makes getting the meat and antlers back alot easier.

We did actually check into that. My uncle has some clients that go up there every year and it is ALOT cheaper then Alaska. Who are you going with?

I did a moose hunt in Alaska in 04. I am lucky though. I have family up there with brush planes...

Only cost me around $1500 and got a nice 54" bullwinkle.

Yea the tag was $500 and license was $85. Only pitched in for gas in the airplane and food. Use airline miles to fly out of seatac. One of the best hunts Ive did. My Kodiak island hunt was pretty fun though. Shot some really nice sitkas.

Pick an area you want to hunt first. Then start looking for an outfitter. Do you want guided or drop off?
