Time to get drift boat ready

June 1st is almost here and the Klickitat will be opening. It's time to get the drift boat ready. River will be a little to high for the first half of the month but should be ready to catch some steelhead after that. Anybody else fishing the klick this year?  See ya there.

I usually try to get down there at least once or twice in June. last year the day it opened between my buddies and i in two boats hooked 11 steelhead

I would hold off at this point on coming down. River is higher than normal. I am sure there is fish but it is dangerously high. I talked with my buddy who is guide and they're not booking the first two weeks. We should hook up if your down.

If you fish a lot I've probably seen you. I guide it all fall. What boat do you have?

I have an old ugly blue and silver valco. It hasn't been on the water much. I am still in the learning stages.

Gotcha, yeah that river isn't a great river to learn on. You'll beat up your boat pretty good if your not on the ball.

Do you camp at leidle in the fall?  Last year I met a couple guys from the west side. I should have it figured out this year. I get better every time.

No thats Red's fly shop. I guide for The Evening Hatch. The owner owns a home near Goldendale and we stay there. Thats the thing about rowing a drift boat, you just have to keep at it. You have to get the point where you don't have to think about it anymore. If i'm down that way I'll send you a message and we can hit the river and get you some time on the sticks

Last year I was in the first one, now i'm in the red one. I'll be hard to miss from now on with that bright red bow

Funny, I've got an old Valco as well!  I don't think I've seen any out on the rivers.  I'm more than decent on the sticks, but just wonder how bad that river can be?  Whats a guided trip run on the Klick?

The river in general isn't all that bad, you just have to always be paying attention. There are very few places where a guy can just float along with maneuvering a little bit. I know of two boats that went down last year, but they were both dumb errors of judgment. It generally gets harder as it gets lower so this time of year isn't so bad as long as there aren't any obstacles you have jump around. last year it was pretty open, who knows what it'll be like this year, I haven't floated it yet or talked to anyone that has. A guided trip will vary but your looking at between 350 and 450 a day. The company I work for charges $450
