what's your favorite pistol?
« on: May 23, 2011, 11:56:44 PM »
I'll be 21 soon  :IBCOOL:  and would like to get one sometime this summer. So I was curious about what everyone on here likes. I'd like to get a 44 magnum revolver. Probly with a barrel around 10 inches. No idea what brand or any other specs. Not sure how much I'm willing to spend on one either.

I'm a collector of original Ruger Flattops in .44 mag. Been packing one and hunting with one for decades.  Of late I've fallen in love with Rugers new Blackhawk in .44 special which is built on the original 1956 .357 Blackhawk frame which makes it very small and compact.  Since they built it with a steel grip frame and steel ejector rod housing it is substantially heavier than an original .44 Flattop.

Ruger Redhawks are fantastic though a bit heavy for an all around belt gun.  For a double action I tend to like the Colt Anaconda though they are tough to find for a reasonable price.  They are very very tough and will handle any reasonable load you wish to run though it.
'I guess if I could have had but one rifle during all the years I hunted, it would have been the .44 (Winchester) .....it was no long range cartridge.....but for just plain every day use to put meat in the pot, it was a difficult cartridge to beat.'

What are your plans for a .44 mag with a 10" barrel?

My favorite pistol is my Ruger nm Blackhawk 4 5/8" .357 mag.
My most practical pistol is my Glock 22.

Of all the handguns I've owned over the years four stand out.

A S&W Model 13 4" HB with custom adjustable sights in 357 it shot well with everything from 125gr HP to 200gr LRNs.

A Star PD in 45 acp that was so accurate that someone offerred me twice what it was worth becaue they thought it was a custom gun, I was using it in Bowling Pin Matches in the early 80's.

A S&W Model 34 4" Round Butt 22 LR, it has killed more game than any rifle or shotgun I've owned.  When I was running back country traplines it kept the pot full of grouse and snowshoe rabbits plus dispatched a semi load of coon, beaver and coyotes.

A Taurus Tracker 4" SS 41 Mag, I was carrying a Taurus 44 Spl at work and got invited to a deer hunt in WI with handguns so traded the 44spl for the 41 Mag, it's light accurate enough and with the ports quite controllable.

I'm not big on large heavy handguns, they are more of a tool to me and I like them to be handy to use.  If I need more power I take a rifle.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

my ccw is a kahr cw 45 with crimson trace is my favorite for day to day.
taurus 1911 works well in the pickup, too big to canseal.

For carry I've been favoring my little Ruger LCP, for hiking and goofing in the woods I've been leaning towards my Springfield XD in .45 ACP, for punching paper I usually pull out my Kimber Custom II. I have others but they don't see as regular use as the three mentioned.

For day to day carry:  Springfield XD subcompact 9mm
For field carry: Ruger SP101 .357 mag
For hunting: Ruger Blackhawk .44 mag.  (never used it for hunting, but would be cool to do so)

1911

Jarheads and their 1911s. If you guys weren't so damn good at shooting them, I'd make a snide remark. Nice pistol you have there.

My friend Rocky, 75 years old and also a misguided child of our uncle, shoots a 1911 with custom coco bolo grips. It's a thing of beauty. He sets up a sand-filled milk jug at 100 yards and hits it consistently. On the 25 yard range here, he literally shot out the 10 spot. It's some of the best handgun shooting I've ever seen. And, that's not even his weapon of choice. He's quite adept shooting the Winchester model 70. Dangerous people, jarheads.

Although there are other choices out there; I will stick to the 1911's
Built these two guys myself

Since you stated that you wanted a 10" 44 mag revolver, I assume that you want to use it for hunting.  44mags are ok, but really, for hunting go larger:  Ruger redhawk in 454 Casul, 480 Ruger or something like that.
