Then you need to resize the picture

Hey 3nails, I say good for your son, I think that's the best way to start them out.  It sinks the hook so deep into them that they'll never look back.  At 11 years old, my son's first buck was a 6x6 muley that scored 165-ish.  It was awesome, and we love the time we get to spend together out there.

Heck no!  My oldest boy has been salivating  at the chance to harvest a bull this fall and he wants a big one!  Why not share the opportunity together because you never know what might happen between that time and the next time? :dunno:

I shot my first buck when I was 13.  A 130 class 19" 5x5 whitey.  My folks had it mounted, picture in the local paper, etc...
It was awesome when it happened, but it took a while for me to kill anything close to that again.  Looking back on it now, (I am almost 40) I actually wish I would have started with a doe or a spike and worked my way up to a biggun.  That first buck was a total fluke, I knew it, my friends knew it, everyone knew it; and for years I felt like I had "used up my luck all at once".  I know it sounds silly, but I really felt like that until I was about 17 and killed one "on my own"...

I agree  that getting a big buck for your first deer will get you hooked. But when you get a big deer  nothing Else will do but a bigger one. I t may take you a life time to find it but when you do get it , it's so worth it.  Thats why they call it Hunting.  :twocents:

Congrats to your boy!!  Good way to start him out.
There is no such thing as a "too big " of a buck for there first IMO.  I have a solid 150 class whitie in mind for my daughter' first buck.  I don't get guys who say that all they need is a doe to get them started, why spoil them right out of the gate?  I say give them a goal to reach for and make it a challenge instead of just killing something to break the ice.  If I wanted her to just get her first kill out of the way I would have her shoot one of my steers, to me that is about as challenging as shooting a doe from the road.
