afternoon buck
« on: May 25, 2011, 03:07:30 PM »
Figured id add to the excitement of no hunting season right now.. A few years back my huntin pard and I decided to scout a new area. It was a hike in of about 5 miles. We left early am on an august morning to do some scouting. We made a base camp and started to hike out onto an adjcent ridge. Im glassing down into this basin when iI hear my partner say "BUCK", I hike down this nasty finger ridge to him and put my binocs up to see a beautiful buck with antlers going out to the tips of his ears then up. Hes got us pinned so we decide to pull out. Mind you this was about 1:00 in the afternoon on a very hot august day in E wa kinda strange to see a deer at that time. All the way home my partner says "I feel real good about this place". Fast forward to opening day Oct 04.We wake up to thick fog and acnt even see 50-100 feet not good for hunting this open basin so we go back to camp and sit. About 12:30 my partners had enough so we hike back to this basin the fog has lifted just a little and is blowing through. As im glassing now with better visibility I look over to my partner he looks across the basin then pulls up his gun and takes a shot I cant see what hes shooting at because of the ridge between us. Just then a doe runs across under me imready with my rifle. My partner then points his gun straight downhill and takes a shot then he jumps up and dissapears down the hill the next thing I hear is him WOOHOO! irun across and down to him and cant believe it its that buck we saw in august, and it is now about 1:30 in the afternoon. This buck was smart enough too move in the afternoon after most hunters were back at camp. We figured him to be at least 5-7 years old, his teeth were wore down he was a gnarly old buck. Enjoy -DSP-
