the great whitetail  vs. muley debate this should last forever.
:yeah: Probably going to turn into a 10 page pissing contest between the whitetail people and the mule deer people. I've never hunted mulies or white tails in the rut but I would take a good mule deer over a good whitetail any day  :twocents:

Try to find a 150 class BT in WA would be the hardest part.... No matter how much you scouted..... And for the WT nut... Have you ever seen them during the rut????? Not the smartest deer in woods would you say.... But what do you think is gonna happen when you only get it once a year for a maybe a few weeks... I'd die trying as well.....

A 150+ blacktail is huge. However, the odds of finding  a 150+ typical blacktail in WA is a far cry better than finding an equivalent (size ratio) typical whitetail or mulie in WA.

A 150+ typical blacktail is roughly on par with a 185+ typical whitetail. In the B&C there are 30 blacktail bucks of this caliber that have been taken in WA. there is only one typical whitetail of this caliber (from WA) in B&C.

As for mule deer. A 150+ typical blacktail is roughly on par with a 200+ typical mule deer. In B&C there are only four of those that have been entered from Washington.

Whitetail bucks are more visible during the rut but it is very rare that I see them in the almost completely oblivious state which I often see with Mulies. I have heard that blacktail rut behavior/vulnerability is similar to whitetail.

I know this is a never ending argument, but having hunted both western and eastern wa my opinion is blacktails are tougher to hunt. I think its more a factor of cover vs. what species you are hunting. Cant say I know much about how blacktail scores compare to whitetail/muley scores but I do know I have rarely needed a scope/ binos on the westside compared to the eastside. Ive always had to work to get in close for a clear shot on blacktails.

Generally speaking I have no doubt a blacktail is more difficult to kill than a Eastern Washington whitetail. Relative to most whitetail in the nation ours experience very little pressure. However, the difficulty of killing a 3.5+ year old whitetail in hard hunted places like some areas in Michigan is probably comparable to hunting blacktail. A buck that lives 3-4 years in states like that is almost completely nocturnal and rarely does the opportunity arise to kill such a buck.
