Elk controlled hunts- Idaho

 Just finnished with my controlled hunt application for Mule deer in Idaho and since I've already spent the money for a non-resident license I figured I may as well put in for an elk hunt too. Anyone have suggestions for a good unit?

 I would lean towards the good tag.

If you have the money to pay a trespass fee.  I would go with 45.  If you don't have the money.  I would go with 54, 52a, or 40 late.  These units have huge bulls but can be hard to find.  Most guys would say that 66a early is the best choice but I don't know anything about it.  I also think that 70 early would be a good tag.  I've seen some huge bulls in there also.  The one thing about Idaho is there are a lot of ok units and not many good or great units.  I think a guy could pick about 10 different units and have a good hunt with a realistic chance at a 330-340 bull.  If you want bigger good luck.

Well that settles it! THEBUGLER from Idaho says unit 11 is a big let down so that must be the premier unit.

has anyone on hear got there archery permit by showing proff that you hunted archery in our state to the Idaho fish and game. You can do this to avoid taking the couse, you need the archery permit to apply for controlled archery hunts.

You should only have to buy the archery permit if you are drawn for an archery tag.  Same with the muzzy permit.

Well that settles it! THEBUGLER from Idaho says unit 11 is a big let down so that must be the premier unit. 

  If you know where to go in Unit 11 it can be a pretty damned good unit and closer to most of you than a lot of the other units. I've spent a fair amount of time in that unit and have seen some great bulls. You better be up on your long shots and ready to hike though.

Unit 11 is still good but not as good as it was 5 or 10 years ago. but still some good 6pt bulls come out of that unit.  320-330ish.
