Mulie from last fall
« on: May 29, 2011, 10:59:37 PM »
Headed up to Alberta for Mulies with sharp stick last fall.  Very great trip.  Chased a 165 Whitetail for 2 nights as well, no dice, but different results on the Mulies.  I had understood that distance can get stretched out, so I had practiced a ton out to 70-100yrds, so 50-60 seemed a slam dunk.  The guide was a little bummed.  His clients had fired 12 arrows, no blood.  They had missed a huge buck 4 times inside 45 yrds.  The last had a lumincok and it hit him in the horn.  Disappeared over the prarie glowing in the evening.  Nice.  He finally got him in November with a rifle hunter.  Scored 234.  Monster typical 4x4 with junk all over.  Sorry, I don't have a picture to upload.  My Mom and Dad had hunted with him, and shot 4 bucks from 176-199.  Pressure was on!
Arrived and drove around all day Sunday.  It was reassuring to pull in and not a raggy old 3-D target standing against a bale.  I immiately pulled out the range finder- 58 yrds- and hit the 10 ring.  Relief! Blue laws, so no hunting.  Holy cow! Deer all over everywhere.  Bunches of them.  Moose, antelope, amazing flocks of Snow geese, the biggest was over 2 miles long.  Noisy suckers.  Fantastic wildlife.
Ended up working on a big Mulie, but not enough wind for a close stalk. More of the same over the next 24 hrs, then on Day 3 I finally connected.
This is a picture of the big ones in the wheat.  Hooters.  The one on the right is about 190+.  This is a quick snap shot of my buck from 3/4 miles away through the scope.   Look close in the center of the picture.  It was extra cool, because I say this one before the guide.  Very white horns
The stalk was excellent.  We slow bumped a couple antelope out of  the area without spooking the buck.  Then worked past another bedded buck.  Finally had to ease into this seemingly flat area with stocking feet.  Ended up having 8 does and about 4 other bucks with him.  We snuck past the does, and while waiting for Mr. Big to stand, the does blew.  Scared the crap out of me.  They were only about 12 yrds away!  My buck was 50 yrds away, jumped to his feet, so I shot quickly.  He was dead broadside when I shot.  He whirled toward me as the arrow hit.  Interesting because he turned into the arrow, the impact was good, but it stuck in his off hip. Very effective.  We were able to watch him tip over abotu 250 yrds away, back, along the way we had stalked.  This ended up being the 3rd biggest buck I saw on the trip.  Very cool

Jack Franklin of Lost Creek Outfitters was the guide.  He shoots 2-5 200" bucks a year.  His brag board is amazing.  This buck didn't make the top 10 for this year!  And I was totally fired up about him.

I've hunted with several guides, and he is as good as it gets.  Tremendous hunter.  Absolutely loves to hunt big mulies.  He didn't get that fired up about the 16" or the 150+ Whitetails.  Gets all lathered up over these big bucks, and really fun to hunt.  He was excited as I was over this buck.
