so how does one take a bear out this big whole? I hunt the same hills as you and I have had bears down on downhill to flat ground to roads and there is no way I am moving a 250lb bear...most awkward animals to handle once down.
Here's a good one from a few years ago....Here's the story, I had been seeing huge bear scat in an area we were hunting and kept after the bear. My hunter had a shot on the 2nd to the last day at what I think was this bear and missed. Next day we killed a smaller bear and then I had to head for Idaho elk hunting so I told one of my guides Jeff (in center), to take his next hunter and watch that area. They hunted a couple days and no luck, finally over the phone I suggested doing some little drives. Jeff would set the hunter up in a good location and walk through the brush. On one drive he came face to face with this bear in the brush, he didn't have a gun and the hunter was posted 200 yards away and didn't know what to do so he started yelling, it ran up the closest tree. Jeff hollered at the hunter who came down and did the deed.So this bear was yelled up a tree... it weighed 456.
here's one from a couple years back.... not sure on weight but he was 7' from nose to tip of tail.haven't measured the skull yet but it'll be over 20".
