anyone ever do a marmot mount?
« on: May 31, 2011, 09:18:51 PM »
I was unfortunately retired from the army last year, and am trying to come up with things to pass the time where i am at home more. At my friends work there are tons of marmots destroying wiring and insulation so the owner gave the OK for him and me to shoot them with bows  :) great practice for the bow and kinda fun. Now i am thinking of trying to do a mount of one for the heck of it. I have done a yote rug before but never a mount any tips or suggestions would be great. Not looking to start a business or anything just sump to do. thanks.

I mounted a couple of them for various museums and interpretive centers when the Oregon trail centennial was happening. They aren't tough to do. I suggest tanning them yourself to save money. Buy a form and go to it. Good project to practice on. Have fun.

No, they're pretty quick and they have sharp teeth.

I wanted to mount one, but I could never get one to stay one piece after I shot him. I guess I shouldve used a gun smaller than a 7 mag.

I'm using a bow and think gonna need to change my small game tips out. Been using g5 small game heads with a awsome kill rate but way to much damage so far.  Would just use a .22 on them buts its a urban enviroment where we are shooting them. would just use one of my broad heads but dont want the arrow to fly too far. So tommorrow it's off to the archery shop for some new tips. Atleast there is no shortage of them to shoot, wife saw 15 more while we were flingin' arrows. Trying to get a video for you guys to see, did a awsome head shot at 30 yards but cam man didnt get it. next weekend its on again  :chuckle:

well another day and no suitible pelts.. considering trying to head shot with a fieldtip, did another headshot at 32 yards today, but its just exploding them. think one of the pro's hear might be able to work with this type of damage but for the first dont think i wanna try one that much damage.
