First Bear on Cam and possible Piebald blacktail?? Check it out

Checked my cam and this little bear showed up and tried to steal my cam... I need expert advice...is the deer in the third pic a piebald?

Its hard to tell, but the weather that day was overcast..Notice the tiny fawn all the way to the right of the 3rd pic

shoot I was afraid of that. Its the first deer Ive gotten on camera that looked either mangy or piebald.. problem is I cant tell if its a white hide or skin

Ive seen a few up at my honey hole, and started talking about it.  NExt thing I know the news is talking about it.

That is not a Piebald, sorry.  That deer has the lice that cause hair problems.

thought lice made the hair fall out? when i zoom on it looks like it has hair in the light areas.

thats what I thought too because you can see what looks like wavy hair. I dont know about the hides or anything I have just never seen anything like that,, at first I figured it was just mangy like so many deer get

That is the hair slip disease that has plagued the west side since 1996.

Great pics, I'm 100% positive it's not a piebald aka pinto, used to have them around the house and seen a ton on the oregon coast. See the difference........

ok I have a question... not trying to jack the thread or anything but how would the meat of these animals be if they had the "hair loss syndrome", ticks or the mange? You would think it would be ok but they could also spead some funky disease..

Your mangy little blacktail looks like a few I have had come in for me. A few guys suggested a combination of louse, over grooming, and winter. I've got a few that have seemed to thin out a bit and grow back as we get into warmer weather.

Well shoot I dont want any deer leprosy but thats a good question CamoDup, I dont know if the disease would be under the skin affecting the meat or not.. Probably would have to be real careful skinning it

When it first started popping up in Snohomish County, my folks had several fawns show up on their property with it so we contacted WDFW to question it and see if we should do anything. The officer told us to do nothing, cold weather would take care of the sick, but he also told us that we could eat them...ummm, no thanks!

I would have no problem eating one.  As far as getting the lice, most (all?) lice are species specific and will crawl around on another species but will not infest it.
