Nipple size
« on: June 10, 2011, 03:36:57 PM »
I picked up a muzzle loader off of a buddy of mine and I am trying to figure out what size the nipple is so I know what caps I need to buy.  Friends an idiot and can't remember what size it is, so that's out of the question.  I know it is not #11, they will not fit on the nipple, not even close.  Found the manual online for the gun and it says it "should" be #11, but it's obvious it has been changed out at some point.  Any ideas on what size it may be?  The nipple is a bigger daimeter than a #11 cap, what sizes are the next biggest in diameter?

There are really only two options, so if it's not a #11 then it's for musket caps.

From your description of the post I would assume it is for a Musket cap...

I really prefer the #11 mag cap as it fits the post so much tighter and offers some degree of water proofing that way.  Just make sure you were to get #11 mag caps and if you were to make a switch look for the RWS Dynamint Noble 1075's. they are the hottest cap made - they come from Germany.  Also the CCI #11 mag cap burns as hot as the musket cap and the new Remington are suppose to be hotter yet, but the 1075's are still the best in my view.

Next question is does anyone have any advice or tips on trying to free up the breech plug.  I got the nipple off but haven't got the breech plug to budge at all yet.  Soaked it in powder solvent with no luck, as well as a wd40 type of penetrating oil.

I have a knight inline.  Has anyone else had trouble with loose fitting caps?  seems like they are always loose fitting.

So it sounds like you have an inline from the way you described taking the nipple off but the breech plug won't budge. I'm no expert on inlines as I only shoot sidelocks but I don't think all breech plugs are removeable. Better check the info on your model first before putting the torque to it. Also, there are very few times where removal of the breech plug is necessary. You should be able to do all of your cleaning with it in place.

Gotta say I was seriously dissapointed when I opened this thread...
Sorry to burst your bubble man.  I actually got a bit of a chuckle out of it when I finished typing and realized how many times I mentioned nipples   :chuckle:

Couple thoughts....

1. remove the barreld action from the stock - then remove the trigger from the action.  If you have a scope mounted might need to take that off also.  Then stand the action in a coffee can and pour boiing water through the muzzle.  Let it stand in the boiling water for a few minutes then put the action in a vice and try removing the bp with a ratchet and socket while it is hot...

2. Get some Kroll Oil and pour that down the barrel and let the Kroll work on the BP.  Kroil oil usually will get it after awhile....

Now that I think about it I really should have started this out with... Are you sure you have #11 nipple installed... has the cap always been loose on that nipple?

More than likely then your #11 Nipple is worn out - it has been peened by the hammer.  When is the last time you replaced it.  Not saying you have, but dry firing is really tuff on any nipple.

One other possibilty really exists... You might have a #10 nipple in the gun instead of a #11... It is really hard to tell the difference with out a micrometer.  You would not believe how easy it is to mix the two nipples up.

The Dynamint Nobel 1075 is actually a 10.75 cap so it is tighter on the post than most of the other... actully most of the time to get the nipple off you have to use a Knife blade to pry it off... Awfull hard for water to get under a tight cap.
