Bear calling question

I missed the seminar  .  I read this on another forum:

Bear calling tactics are a bit different than calling predators such as fox or coyotes aside from the danger factor. A bear's attention span seems to be very short and if they're responding to a call and the sound stops generally the bear will also stop. This can be used to your advantage to get a bear stopped in perfect shooting position or hopefully stop him BEFORE he runs plumb over you! When you start a calling series, call as continuously as you can. When you spot a bear headed your way, you can vary your calling according to his reactions and get a better feel for how to handle him when he approaches shooting distance. Two callers are often better than one when calling bear, aside from the safety factor, as you can keep up continuous calling for longer periods of time. Bear can hear a call for distances up to a mile and often will take their time in responding so plan on spending at least an hour at each calling stand to give them plenty of time to come in. In choosing a stand site, remember to keep the wind in your favor as much as possible and take the time to get as comfortable as possible so you don't have to move around and can stay put for an hour or more.

I know to sit in a spot for about 2 hours but, do I blow on the fawn in distress for 2 hours?  Do I camke a 30-60 second call and give it a rest for a few minutes?  Blow consistantly every minute for 2 hours? 

And what is going to be the better fall bear option for Western Washington, a fawn in distress or dying rabbit?  Or something else?

I stay in one spot for 50 to 60 minutes, I call non-stop the whole time.  I put a watch out in front of me so I can see how long I've been calling without too much movement.  Calling for 20 minutes feels like 60 when you first start doing it.  If it is too much work you can always start off with an electric caller and switch or do it the other way around.  2 Callers are nice as you can swap off.  I've called in several bears with a javelina call, so the particular type of call I believe is not nearly as important as projecting pain and suffering in your calls.  I personally like a loud raspy type call.

my bear call evolves around being very Raspy. just finished two elkhorn closed reed's for order's. they are tuned Raspy they will call all predator's. there is a lady in oregon that has called in several bears over the year's with Johnny stewart Javalina in Distress. snowshoe Hare is also good. i'm always the caller two is better. i starting to mix in ecaller sounds while on stands get more stands in that way. dont get worn out. put imotion it your calling. Rick

I do alot of what I call, 'casting'....basically, cold calling into areas that look like they hold bear....just like in fishing, you never know whats in there till you toss something in that batch of weeds!

This is an example of when I've cold called an area.....I didnt see or hear any bears (though I had before, in this area), called and literally within a couple minutes, IF THAT, this guy came in. If I was just walking along, I may have never seen him. Use calling to help get animals show themselves.

Another example of cold calling, I had a bear opening day 2 years ago, get within 15 yards of me and I never saw/heard it. My brother was watching the whole thing (he ended up spooking it by slipping off a rock trying to get a shot at it)  . It was only coming in WHILE I was calling. It would stop moving when I stopped calling. Some come in, charging, other come in all stealthy.

Here's the Machias theroy on bear calling, take it or leave it.  Almost all the bears that I hear coming in are mid-size and up, more on the UP size.  I believe smaller bears sneak in, they don't want to get their butts kicked by whatever is eating whatever is screaming.  Most of the smaller bears I've called in were suddenly just standing there a few yards away looking at me.  If I hear a bear coming in most of the time it is the bigger version, I think they are trying to intimidate whatever is eating whatever is screaming.  However I have had some on the big fellas slip in.  Nothing like slooooowly turning your head one way and then slowly turning it back and have a bear standing there 12 to 15 yards away with a little drool slidding out the side of his mouth!!
