Selkirk Mtns. A Moose Hunt
« on: June 15, 2011, 11:17:16 PM »
It was brought to me attention as of last night that I was a lucky draw for a moose hunt.  I am an experienced hunter with bucks, bulls, and bears under my belt.  However, I have never even thought of venturing into a moose hunt.  The hunt is in the Selkirk Mountains A for any moose.  Does anyone have any information that can be provided in regards to the area and the best tactics to use, timing on the hunt, places to go, places to stay or camp, anything would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!
I've spent most of my life hunting and fishing....the rest has been wasted

Well you will probably catch crap from people about asking for help on your first post but I don't care about that.  It's a once in a lifetime tag and I'll at least tell you what I know.  The area is steep and dense, but there are definatly moose if you put in the effort.  I would get out and do as much scouting as you can in advance because it's not going to be a walk in the park to find them.  There are some great places to camp up at Sullivan lake.  There is a nice campground there, as well as a few others scattered in that unit.  Get a map and most of them will show up on it.  Also, be warned that you will be hunting in Grizzly country so be aware of that.  Good luck on your hunt, hope to see some pictures after it's all said and done.

I havn't spent a whole lot of time up that way, but in the little time I have spent I have seen plenty of moose.  By the way, you stole my tag!  I took a crack at elk hunting up that way a few years ago around Bunchgrass meadows and in one weekend I saw 4 moose, 2 of which were definately early season shooters.  Should be a real fun hunt, beautiful country up that way.  Keep us posted!

I deer hunt the muzzleloader season in 113 and a few years ago my buddy and I saw a moose coming down the road on top of a vehicle. (Yeah, it was dead, all you jokers!)  We were up in the CCA area.  Take the right at the north end of the Indian Res. and go way up in there.  Lots of area up there to check out.  Deer, Bear and Elk as well.  Don't get et by a Grizz.  Good Luck.  Looks like you got one of only 17 tags, no?
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

One of the funnest hunts I ever went on.  My buddy drew that tag a couple years ago, the memory is forever mounted above his mantel.  Have fun!

I appreciate any and all forms of advice.  I am aware that it is Grizzly country and I will be sure to bring along my trusty sidearm.  I am going to make a few attempts at scouting the area.  I will be sure to post anything that I encounter during the scout and the hunt. Hopefully it wont involve a grizzly.....

I hunt up LeClerc Creek Rd. That would be where I would start take a drive up 1935 It will take you over Monumental Mountain and come out at Noisy Creek near Sullivan Lake.

The pick below has cordnants of a camping spot on the way up 1935 at the back is a trail that will take you to what use to be a beaver pond it would be a good place for a game camera.

Hope you have horses or some friend's with strong backs lol.

O and it's not the Grizz one worry's about up there it's the Wolf!

I have seen and heard of the monster bulls up over there.  And a guy i know has a set of paddles that are number 4 in the state for sheds from over there. My best advice is go really High seems to be where they are in the fall. And the coyotes are really big over there! If you see one just shoot it. Help the elk and moose. Good Luck! Should be a amazing hunt!

I dont understand why people would be offended or angered at the fact that there are hunters asking fellow hunters for general advice.  Isn't that not half the point for a forum based website?  However I appreciate any and all criticism and advice.  Thanks.  :dunno:

Some people just don't like brand new members coming on with there first few posts saying- i don't know the area at all- where do i need to go- do you have any advise. Then they get help and dropping off the face of the earth.

To me it does not matter, if people want to share great! That shows good people! If i knew anything about the area I would help, but I have no clue there so I can't help. I know mt Spokane a little and have offered and helped more then a few people with the tags.

Well anyone that would be interested in grouping up...I am going to head over in August and scout the area.  I will mainly be focusing a majority of my time to the beginning of the season.  I will be hunting from Oct1-12 and if I am not lucky in between then I will come back towards the end of the month or the beginning of November.

Its tacky... and shows a lack of class. Even if you stick around. I myself ask for help here from time to time.  Yes, that is one of the best reasons to have a forum.  However, there is a good way and a not-so-good way to go about seeking information. Go look through the introductions page and see people who were complemented for good first posts... They put up pictures, share stories, etc. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Opening morning is months away. It wouldn't have made much of a difference in your scouting and preparation to spend even just a week contributing to discussions, offering to connect with other hunters, or even offering some advice yourself. Big contrast to talking in the door and basically saying "hi, I'm new--give me free s*."  :twocents:

I have turkey hunted in Colville before but have never been any further northeast in Washington.  Would it be better to concentrate towards the corner of the state or southern part of the unit?  I just want any knowledge that I can recieve prior to scouting and hunting due to the fact that its about a nine hour drive one way from my residence and I am limited to the time off I can take from work.

Most of the time Bentley its because people ask the question then never return.  They don't bother to answer questions or share their hunt etc.   You appear very interactive with your post which is a Thumbs up to a great start.  Have any ideas what you are planning?  amount of vacation, other hunts, etc, or time of year.  Plan on using your rifle or your bow?  Trophy standards?  Able to attack the mountain or what style of hunt do you like?

Bearpaw posted a nice thread on here with some very useful...generic moose hunting advice.

If I get organized I think I am about to sell all of my moose calling videos.  I think I have figured out how to do it by now. ;)  .  If you are interested in learning how to call for them, thats a good start.

The whole unit is full of moose.  Its a matter of picking the hunt that is for you.  Depending on what time of year you are planning you will have different influences.  Elk hunters, whitetail hunters, rut, weather, onlookers, photographers, etc.    Let us know what you are thinking, and I'll try to narrow down your pitfall list.

I shot mine on the westside of the 306 road last year on november 3rd.I saw 3 other bulls and some cows.It was good time to hunt if you have an eastside elk tag.I didn't get an elk,But saw one of the biggest bulls I've ever seen during open season.

Nice Shiras Moose!!!! I appreciate the story and pics because it not only excites me to see anothers success, but it also gives me a clue as to what I am looking for when it comes to a trophy Shiras (as they are the smallest of the moose family).  I believe the books require a score of 130.  Man I can't wait for October.  I have a lot to learn before then though....Master the moose horn...

The minimum is 125 inches for Pope and Young and 140 for Boone and Crockett. Also, I would suggest learning to call with your mouth, it makes it much easier and IMO sounds a whole lot better than any man-made moose call that I have heard.

From what I have encountered, I am taking off Oct1-11 and also have Nov14-22 off and a few three day weekends in between (originaly reserved for deer season but my priorities have took a sudden change).  I am bringing both my bow and 300WM.  If I can get a close shot I want to take it with my Black Ice. However, I want a backup plan for that trophy who is out of range.  I am capable of tackling any sort of terrain and obstacles however my hunting counterparts may not be.  Is the first of the season the best time to hunt for moose?  Should I pack my bow around along with my rifle and pistol?

You can carry a handgun with you why you are rifle hunting and most handguns you can use to shoot the deer with. In the archery season you can carry one but only use it for personal protection. For the moose hunt, since any legal weapon is o.k. you could carry a sidearm and if it meets the restrictions, even use it to shoot the moose.

I checked last season with WDFW and was told it was legal for me to have both a rifle and bow in hand in the field as the tag is an any weapon.  I did wear orange while walking in the woods but on my two close encouters calling in bulls, I did pull off the orange once they started coming in.  Carried my bow and actually used my son to sherpa my rifle till he had to go back to school.  Bear open so if a buddy wants to carry your rifle, he just needs a bear tag to be legal.  Will get back to you more later.

Coug, yes.  With rifle although I really wanted to do it with bow.  Gave in to the pressure from home to get-er-done.

There are two folks on here who have asked as well.

I have hunted moose in that unit...  You can search this site on my moose story.  Most people like the South end of the unit because it is owned by private logging companies.  They thin or log it so you can see more moose. But there are moose all over that unit.
