So you are saying hiking in a mile and 1/4 on a quad trail and shooting a moose when you don't own a quad is not a good idea.

Sounded like a sound plan to me.

i was told by a landowner in 117.. .she says head behind the survival school area.  lots of moose in the area.  i bowhunt the lower portion for deer, but haven't ever seen a moose there.

i work with another guy that got this tag, manfromspam, and he's getting the same ration of s#!t you are.  he's been a member for years but keeps his mouth shut and people are treating him like some newb no one.  don't take it to heart.  there are good people on this site, but after the draw like this, when they didn't get drawn... well, they get a little testy!   :sry:

Personally, I would do a couple late summer/early fall camping trips over to that area. If you can't do that, do a search of this site and PM all the past tag holders for specific areas. There are several members who have had that tag. Good luck

HArdest part of the hunt is now over, packout is 2nd hardest, have fun and don't shoot the first little bull you see.  Hold out for a good one.

Here are a couple that are worthy of a tag, from 117 last year!

The best part of the hunt is in September and early October when they are rutting. When you get one coming they come on a string. I never did make into the later part of the season when the snow flies. Enjoy all of it because it will be over way to soon.

Might want to read the hunting laws before you hunt in there again.  Closed area.  Has been for at least 5 years.

I drew in 1999 and had the same experience.  Unlike deer and elk, locals seem willing to share information about moose because you're not competing.  After several scouting trips I met two loggers that befriended me and helped me locate a bull.  They helped me after I shot it, and one offered to hang it in his garage and butcher it for me.

Spend some time over there.  Get to know the roads, meet some locals, and remember you have two months to hunt: the first in the rut, and the second in some snow possibly.  The best moose I saw were higher up.  The areas around Little Calispell Peak was where I saw the most moose.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

His one and only post is where are they? I'm not gettin testy because I didn't get drawn (didn't even put in for anything) it's when people get a tag for something and just want location's handed to him before he even starts looking. Maybe after a couple trips over and scouting and hasn't seen anything then ask for some help. Maybe he should tell us a little about himself before asking.

I'm not sure what the big deal is either...This is an OIL tag. It seems that some people expect the 15,000 + people who applied for this tag to already know something about the hunt. If people didn't apply for tags they knew nothing about, our drawing odds would be a whole heck of alot better.

And what's the deal with wanting people to introduce themselves. Does anyone really even read the introductions? If someone was to ask you while out hunting to help pack out a downed animal would you request him to tell you a little bit about himself?  :chuckle: :chuckle:

i drew that same tag about 5 years ago..... scouted it and saw quite a few moose off the Tacoma Road (?) but the north side of it is off limits...shot mine opening evening off the Winchester Creek road at about mile marker 13 (saw 3 bulls and 2 cows that day but this one was the easiest pack).  they were rutting like crazy the first of October.  while we were scouting saw a smaller bull a couple times around mile marker 3 on that road and one of the guys that was tagging along with us later ran into a hunter who had the same tag and told him about the bull at mile marker 3.  he drove up that road about a week later and saw some folks pulled over so he got out and looked and they were taking pics of the same bull playing around in the creek so he shot it ....mine had a scar down the length of his nose (you really cant see in the pic) and when we quartered him out had two busted ribs from rutting.  the hardest part of your hunt is done (drawing the tag) now you just have to choose which one to shoot.  We had a great time as we "camped" in Chewelah and took 3 days prior to the opener riding enduro motorcycles out of town into the hills scouting.  by the opener we were pretty sure where we wanted to hunt and it paid off.  We took several weekends prior just driving around checking things out.  first pic is of bull at mile marker 3...second is one i shot

So a guy draws a OIL tag, one he probably never figured on drawing so he's never hunted in the area.  He googles washington moose tag and hits this site.  He joins because it seems like a great resource.  asks if anyone knows the area and maybe a place he should start looking.  what's wrong with pointing him in a direction to help a guy out?  how many posts are required before you can ask for a general location to get started looking?  is there a number required?

sorry for the erroneous information on the survival school.  i've never been in the area as i hunt the lower portion of 117.  just passing on what i heard.

Everyone needs to relax. It's a fun, action packed hunt. Truely an OIL. There aren't 50 inchers behind every bush but you will get an opportunity. Most of the guys I talked to shot bulls between 30 and 42 inches. Plenty of people will come out of the woodwork to help. Good Luck!

If I had the tag I think I would start around Flowery Trail rd area. I saw an absolute monster in there while I was deer hunting a few years back. Saw quite a few others also. Not sure if this helps or not, but like was said above the whole unit holds tons of moose. Good luck with the hunt.

Type in "49 degrees north" and start skimming topics. You'll find lots of info.
