How Accessible is the Winston Unit?
« on: June 17, 2011, 09:16:25 AM »
I plan on hunting it this year, but would like to do some research before I go. I am just not sure how accessible it is before Archery Elk season and how accessible it is once the season opens. I will be coming from Puyallup and I am not sure if I can come through the Randle unit or Mossyrock. Any advice before I go done there in 2 weeks to start scouting it out?

Most of the Unit is Tiber company and locked up for drive in during the summer.  But you can hike in all you want.

What season are you planning on hunting? The gates wont open before MF, so any scouting will be via foot or mountain bike.

during e/a its locked up tight hike OK bike in only. last year there were several people driving past the gates but there were a few wardens there but that's a whole different subject that we just dont want to get into. but its a pretty good area and theres alot of land to hike

Gates on the North side of the unit will be locked again this year as they were last year.
Lots of area to hike into though.  Good luck.

:yeah: i dont hunt that unit during opening for bow, im pretty sure though the gates are closed until rifle. Girlfriends dad hunts that hunt I'll ask him next time i see him. Went in during late archery and i think one gate was open  :dunno:. Again not super familiar with the area. My best advice is get a bike .

How would I go about finding out if and when the gates are closed? I defiantly have a bike and my hunting buddy has a meat rack, he will defiantly go with me as I hope to need help packing out!! I guess that I would want the gates closed so that I can take the advantage for those that don't want to hike or bike in and get away from the crowds...

You can call the access hotline at 1-866-636-6531. Expect it to be locked up and all access by leg power. I have not seen it open early season for atleast 7 years.

I want to say thanks for the PM's and I think Im on the right track. It looks like the gate are closed but I've herd that they are able to get in, how's that possible?
I'm also going down next week to check it and do some scouting, has any one been down to check it out and have you've seen any thing yet? Cows? Bulls? Any pics?

OK, I'm a little frustrated about finding out access into the winston unit. I figured out where I'm going to enter, but upon calling to see if the roads are open they tell me they are closed?? Can some one tell me if Camp 9 road is open to the public or is it closed? I just want to know if I have to bring my bike and cycle in or am I able to drive down Camp 9 now and during early archery Elk? :dunno:

You must be scouting at the local store   :chuckle:  If you can't find elk in the winston you best give it up now! All joking  a side, good luck and I hope you are having a good time.
