Savage 11 6.5 Creedmore vs. 111 6.5x284 Norma
« on: June 23, 2011, 11:30:19 AM »
Thinking about getting one of these two rifles. I wanted a savage for a while now and love the new Long Range Hunters they recently came out with. Especially the 26" barrels, on-off muzzlebreak feature and offerings in 6.5mm...

Question I have... is which one? the 11 6.5 Creedmore or the 111 6.5x284 Norma.

What I plan on using it for...

Deer, antelope and varmits.

I pretty much do not have a varmit rifle and would like to have something that can also go for a deer too if I so choose.

Savage is pretty known for some crazy factory accuracy and I have heard nothing but good things about these rifles.

6.5 Creedmore is intriguing due to the short action. I love my 300 WSM precisely because it is a nice short action rifle.. This savage comes with a nice 26" barrel and is basically identical to the 111 but with different caliber offerings.

6.5x284 Norma gets some great long distance reviews and has about 100+ fps on the Creedmore.

Does anyone have either of these and offer some insight?

There is an article in the American Hunter Magazine and probably the American Rifleman as well about the Creedmore.  It talks about the round being great for both hunting and target/high power competitive shooting.

I think they are great rounds, but you must be a reloader and also the article talked about the lack of load data for the Creedmore.  If you have that then you got it made.

Thought of the same thing a few years back; I ended up with a 6.5 Swede cal.

I reload so that is not an issue. in fact its a bonus.

The ballistics are pretty much all favoring the 284 Norma.. but the Creedmore is not a HUGE drop off.. basically 100 fps at the muzzle and beyond 400 yards..  And its a short action, which is nice.

That being said.. I am leading towards te 284.. unless I hear a nay say'er that gives a solid reason why the Creedmore is better.

I don't think you can go wrong with either, but am wondering why they compromise the short action's weight loss with a 26" barrel?  :dunno:
