Cowiche Muzzy quality elk tag
« on: June 18, 2011, 08:47:44 PM »
Got lucky this year and drew my first quality elk tag for the Cowiche unit during muzzle loader season.  Just looking for what people's experience is with this unit, this tag, and what some people think I should hold out for.  I normally hunt archery season and have scored a bull through spot and stock, or calling the last 4 years straight.  I think of myself as a pretty good caller, but love to learn new tricks.  I will be there all 10 days and plan to scout up there at least 3-4 times prior to the season.  If you have any experiences with the unit you would like to share let me know or send me a pm.

Thanks
Matt

If you have got a bull the last 4 years strait thats pretty cool. I don't think you need to much help :chuckle: Good luck on your hunt.

I drew the cowiche tag for archery season last year. You can hold out for a good bull, low to mid 300's are not uncommon, even a few larger than that if you know were to look. Scouting is a must, good areas in the south fork, but i would narrow my search to the north, northwest part of the unit, Reynolds to louie Gap and Dome peak. Don't hold out to long though, or you'll be eating cow steaks from the late season.
You can say the early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse always gets the cheese!

You only have one day with just bull tags out there..... If you would shoot it on the last day I wouldn't pass it up on the 1st.....  :twocents:  After the general opener most of your time should be spent in escape routes... These elk get pushed very hard during this season..... Go up to Eagle's Nest and take a look around..... You''l love it...... I've had good sucess in quite a few area's around the unit.... Pm me if interest.... I drew that tag 3 years ago..... You'll see the avg bull will be in the low 300-320....... I couldn't get a shot on a 350-360 class as we couldn't get any closer for a good clean shot.... Messed up a stalk on a 370 class 6x7 that I had pinned down for 3 weeks.... He bedded a couple hundred yards closer then I had ever seen him....  :chuckle: I couldn't pass up this beautiful 6 point on the 3rd day..... He scores 333...... Good luck!!!!

Not good in all honesty..... I saw 3 legal shooters last year.... Past on everyone.... I mainly hunted the deer season just to scout for elk.... I rather come home and do a late BT season then shoot a small 3 or 4 over there and take out one more buck from the herd..  :twocents:  The herd is down 50% or more from the hair loss and some bad winters.... Plus the cougars are killing them off like crazy..... Saw 6 cats in a 4 mile radius in two days..... Some could be the same but still not good news for the deer.... My buddy got one and heard from 4 different guys about missing one here or there....
