g5 striker vs striker magnum 1 1/8 or 1 1/2?
« on: July 05, 2011, 10:32:07 PM »
I've been using 100 gn G5 Montecs tipping Gold Tip  Pro Hunter 7595's (425 gn total at 308 fps) for a few years now and am going to be changing it up a bit. I'm a bit over the speed craze and planning on going heavier for better penetration on elk. Ordered some of the new Gold Tip Kinetic Pros which I'm very much looking forward to trying. Switching to 125 gn G5 Strikers for heads. What I can't decide is if I want to go with the regular strikers with a 1 1/8" cut or the Magnums with a whopping 1 1/2" cut. Total arrow weight will be around 500 gn at around 280 fps so it will be a smasher. I'm just wondering how much penetration i'll be giving up to go that wide. On the other hand, pass through would leave a pretty crazy blood trail. I'm not concerned with problems with arrow flight as I'm convinced that tuning and proper spine solves most broadhead flight problems. What do you guys think between the two?

I think you should look at the grizztrick if you want lots of cutting surface. I'd be weary of the magnums. I read from g5 the the mags are made for shots under 25yards a while ago, but maybe they fixed that. Those grizztricks leave a nasty mark in my target tho...

I'm a bit over the speed craze and planning on going heavier for better penetration on elk.

Not that penetration with todays bows is much of an issue. But, you say you are going heavier for more penetration and then say you are looking at the steep angled 1.5" head.  Doesn't make much sense as those two statements contradict one another.

Try putting a 1.125" broadhead down a 12 gauge barrel.  Really helps you appreciate how big an inch and an eighth really is.  Plus it is more accurate, handles windy conditions better and of course penetrates considerably better.  1.5's are cool and all but dead animals on the ground are even cooler!

Last bull the Squaw killed was 53 yards with 50# 24.5" draw and a Savora 1.125" broadhead.  He bolted five yards stumbled back five yards and went down in the exact same spot he was standing when she hit him.  Don't worry about broadhead size - Worry about keeping them sharp and putting them in the right spot.

The Strikers are using a pretty good blade.  Not a bad choice at all.

He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
