kids shotguns

Hello,

I think I have touched on this before but I am am trying to narrow this down.  My oldest boy is 9 the youngest 7 I am going to use the taxes this year to set them up with there hunting gear( I retire from the navy 2012 and want it done before I am looking for work) I am leaning towards a 20G but I am not sure. it will be for turkey, waterfowl and anything else that you use a shotgun for..I started with a 12g single shot and it was brutal at that age.  what do you all suggest?

I bought both my boys 20g (Mossberg 500 youth model).  We've used em for turkey and upland birds.  They've worked real good.  Now that they're older I'm gonna have to find the certificate to get the full sized stock.

Yea a 12 ga single would be brutal for that age of kid.
I bought mine a used Rem 1100 LT. It is a small package w/ smaller stock, short barrel w/ rem choke in 20ga. Recoil is very managable in the semi-auto.

My stepdad does shotgun shooting lessons. For the youth groups he works with they have a youth sized Beretta Silver Pigeon. Big money. You can get a youth Mossberg 500 for $300 give or take. Nice gun and they work well always. My buddy's kid turkey hunts with one of them in 20 gauge.

I bought my wife a youth model Browning BPS in 20 ga and that is a sweet little shotgun.  Would be perfect for kids that age.  Recoil is minimal.  Nice thing about it is she shoots left handed and I shoot right.  Safety is on top and it bottom ejects so we can both use it.  It is a great small game gun as it is very light and you can carry it forever.

Remington 870 express magnum youth 20g. Shoots 2 3/4" and 3". Still have mine after 19 yrs. Good little gun but the only time I take it out now is for grouse and quail. Shot plenty of pheasants, ducks and an occasional goose when they would come around our property.

My dad bought me a Remington 1100 LT when I was 11.  32 years later and that gun is still a favorite of mine.  Excellent gun for grouse and chukar, and back in the day it took down lots of ducks.  My wife used it to shoot her first pheasant.

Mossberg makes some great youth guns. I have switched to a browning bps for everything and it is a killer gun. If you can put up a little more change I would pick up a bps but the mossbergs are pretty good to.

Remington 870 Youth or Mossberg 500 Youth in 20 ga.  I personally like the Mossberg because of the tang safety but the Remington is bullet proof and probably  the most popular pump shotgun out there.  I have a Mossberg 500 Crowne Grade 12ga. and my younger brother got the 500 Youth Crowne Grade when he was 10-11 and still has it.  Cool little gun for sure.

You can get that Mossberg as a youth combo with a rifled slug barrel.  I have shot three of my last four deer with my wife's.  Look for the cantilevered scope mount model rather than the fiber optic sights.  Nice gun.
