Cow Tag For GMU 578 West Klickitat HELP?
« on: June 22, 2011, 10:32:42 PM »
I was drawn this year for a Cow tag for GMU 578 West Klickitat, I am a experienced hunter but I have never been to this area must less looked for elk here. I am looking for any advice on hunting the GMU 578 and also if anyone has any leads on Private property too hunt on. If anyone would be willing to help out I would greatly appreciate it, I really do not wont to let my tag go to waste. Shoot me a message and I look forward to meeting some new hunting friends.

Either way, pray for snow and put the time in before the hunt.  I doubt you will find any private land to hunt, pretty close knit group here.  Welcome to the site and good luck with your hunt.  Also, remember you can not hunt on the refuge.

Very close knit group I know a few of them. Private ground hunting is probably a 1:10,000 chance :chuckle:

The refuge is a no no  :chuckle:

The one time I hunted over there on and off some private land with a muzzle loader I had a group of cows stand about 30 yards into the refuge and stare at me! Those sob's know when they are safe :bash: If the land trade had went threw a few years ago it would have been murder on them :chuckle:

Ya, they know where it is safe.  I live right smack in the middle of the 578, lots of public land to hunt.  Last year the elk were scarce that's for sure.  I haven't decided if this year will be any better.

I know a lot of people that hunt over there and last year was off for sure. A whole crew from goldendale goes down there to hunt so I get lots of stories. If I muzzled elk I would hunt over there every year but I have been bowhunting them for 5 years on the east side. I also know a few people that live right next to the refuge and they said they were few and far between.

have fun,  :chuckle: :chuckle: here is a hint the locals run that unit. :sry: look north to be safe. look for a stump and sit the entire season, this is a unit for people that know how these elk act to pressure.  it is not an easy elk tag to fill.  j

Just curious if you are a virgin to the area then why would you apply for it.  There are way better cow hunts on the west side, and without being familiar with the area or knowing some of the locals your chances of filling this tag aren't very good, just not that many elk on public land during the late hunt.  :twocents:

You have a better chance filling a general tag with a three point or better bull in most any other westside unit. The tag u have is nothing special sorry to tell ya. :sry:

I was up there camping and scouting last weekend.  Five guys in my camp drew west klickitat cow tags for rifle season this year it was their second choice! We saw plenty of sign and a couple cows. We have taken a few elk there when it was any elk. They are few and far between but scout and and hit it hard when the season opens good luck.

This was not my 1st choice so I just gotta make the best of it. That's why I thought I would look to you all for some good advice. I do alot of hunting in the mashel and in randle. I could use any info on this area and again I appreciate the help.

It had a low success rate a few years back when it was either sex.  To bad they gave you the second option.  I would go hunt the general season else where.
