Blazers not sticking - Is it the helical?
« on: June 27, 2011, 11:28:33 AM »
I've been having a problem with my 2" blazer vanes not bonding to the shafts, regardless of what type glue I use or how much I use. My fletching jig is the Jojan fletcher with a helical. Anyone have similar experience and have a solution for me? Thanks.

Does dipping accomplish the same thing?

Yes but I don't like dipped carbon arrows. The paint does not stay of the shaft as well.

Thanks Carp. I'll try that with the next batch.

No pro, the finish on some shafts will not let the glue stick well. With a wrap any glue/vane will stick. You could also try to ruff up the shafts with some fine sand paper, but I have never liked doing that.

Yeah, I've had problems with added water weight in the rain after sanding off the finish. I like the wrap idea much better.

are you cleaning the base of the fletching before glueing them? They have an accelerant on them that if wiped off will prevent them from sticking.

Yes, I clean both the shafts and the vanes with pure denatured alcohol. I've been told today that the Beaman shafts have a coating on them that inhibits bonding. The advice to wrap them was repeated. I think I'm all set and thanks everyone for helping me out with this.

I prefer to wrap then dip! Everything gets sticky that way.

Wrapping is not always the way to go, it will add weight to the end and could throw off the balance of your arrows. I would  balance them before adding more weight just to make sure. If they need a little weight in the rear go for it, if not you could see a difference     in flight and tuning. To balance use 10% foc. When finding center include broad heads and the v of the nick for total length. Try lightly sanding the shaft before using the alcohol. Little alcohol on the face of the vanes don't hurt either.
