Late Palouse rifle hunt.

Ok guy's and gals, I have to ask considering I was dumb enough to put the Palouse as one of my choices this year and got drawn! Don't get me wrong I do have land around Colfax to hunt ( which what I had in mind when applying), but after looking into the area huntable for this tag I was wondering if I should look more into northern area (toward Cheney and east) Or just stay south 
I know that there are probably better deer and more of them up north but also there is bound to be more hunters! So what is your intake on this problem and for all you that have had this tag before what would you have done different! Thanks in advance  Jason

Access is an issue because 99% of the land is private.  Inland Paper Co. owns a huge chunk of property in the Mt. Spokane unit, which I think is in the unit and you can buy a recreational pass from them for less than $50. I had this tag last year and found that gaining access was very cumbersome because a lot of the local guys put in for these tags and get pissed when others from outside get them.

Unless you have a bunch of time to knock on doors and scout new areas, I would probably just hunt the area that you know and have access to. That's my  for what its worth.  Good luck!

I had this tag last year and found that gaining access was very cumbersome because a lot of the local guys put in for these tags and get pissed when others from outside get them.

   My buddies and I get pissed 'cause we can't even hunt our own land late anymore.   I think they should do like some NM units where you have to have written permission from a LO to apply for the tag.   The Palouse is 99% private.   I hunt a lot of states/units every year, but I don't apply for places that are less than 60/40 public-private.   I just had a buddy with really good private say that several people that he knew drew the tag and THEN asked to hunt.   Kinda sounds backwards to me?   My other buddy has some of the best WT ground in the state and I know it aggrivates him.   Mainly because he has a 3/4 mile private drive that it posted up with neon signs and people still wander up to ask.

Sounds like most on here do it the right way.

I hunt around Freeman area seen some bucks there that would make your jaw drop havent got one yet but i know they are there i got this tag also hope to tag one of the big ones this fall

Norsepeak - GREAT Palouse whitetail!  I saw 3 deer taken last rifle season down there just out of Colfax near the river that looked very similar in genetics to the one in your pic.  There are some bruisers cruising around down there for sure.

love hunting the palouse. perfect season would be getting for the 2nd deer tag and the late palouse tag. shoot a doe during the general season and then find a big buck during the late hunt.

I also have this tag, and have had it several times in the last few years.  I was born and raised in Colfax and have several places near Colfax that I have permission to hunt.  I now live in Spokane and know quite a few people that hunt around here.  From seeing the deer they see/kill and knowing what is coming out of the Colfax area I can say that the quantity of truley quality deer is greater in the Northern part of the permit area, but it is also much harder to get permission in the northern part of the area.

  I was really hoping to pull that off this year, but only managed the late buck.  My dad was lucky enough to pull the Colfax 2nd deer and the Palouse Late Buck, so he's set for deer season.
