Bear
« on: June 29, 2011, 11:02:52 AM »
What is the scoring process for black bear.  I just got my rug and scull back, He squared out at 6' 3'' and had a big old head on him.  Just wondering if he might make book.

Take the skull, without the lower jaw and lay it on a table.  I use two framing squares and measure from tip of the nose to the back of the head.  Then measure from the widest part side to side...the cheek bones.  Add those two together and that's your score.  Lets see the pics!!

I believe it's 18 8/16 for Washington book, and for all time B&C it's got to be a huge 21 inches

That will get you close, but you will be a few 16ths short. Place the skull against a wall or post (something that doesn't move) and put the square against the teeth/nose and then raise the front of the skull, allowing the teeth to push the square out a bit.

At least that is how the B&C scorer did mine (moving up and down) on a slide measuring tool.
