Winston Cow Permit
«
on:

Hey, I am pretty new to this site and I just went to the intro page to tell everyone a little about myself. My younger brother who is 13 is hunting for the first time this year and we both got drawn with my Dad for the Winston unit regular season cow permits.
We have never hunted in there and we only put in because of the number of permits they give out. Also we have heard that there are a lot of elk in there, so theres a chance someone in our family will finally shoot an elk.
I am not looking for gps coordinates to a specific spot, but any advice or areas to scout would be appreciated. Thanks for your help in advance.

I am assuming you have MF tags. If so, go in the "war zone" better known as Kid Valley and look around in there. You can probably find a couple of cows close to the road!

Thanks for the advice. Kid Valley looks like a big area according to google maps, so I am still a little unclear on where to start.
Any other advice would be appreciated. I am still trying to track down a map of the unit because I wanted to head down this weekend. If you know a store that sells maps of the unit, please let me know.
I am planning on doing some hiking and biking behind some gates, but I dont even know where to start.

Take 505 out of Toledo.Go 13 miles to the cutoff.Go left on 504 about 4 miles. You will cross the Toutle river.Go about a half mile to the bottom of the hill and you will see a logging rd on the left.Thats the 1900.That is the main area into the Winston unit.If you go just past the 1900 Kid valley park campground is on your left.Kid Valley store is on your right.
When you get to the cutoff at 504 you can take a right.Go about 5 miles and you will be in Toutle.Drews store/gas staion is on the right. They will probably have maps there.
There are a lot of other areas that are easily accessable that are on your way to 19 mile. Keep an eye out for Weyco gates.
Put in just a little effort and you guys will get your cows.

1900=warzone=meatshoot. They get pushed around and around in there spend a little time and they will come around.

I got my permit in the mail last Thursday for the Anterless Tag in Winston January 1st - 16th.... I can't wait to finally get an elk. Since the Bull that I shot 2 years ago ran off in another direction after shooting and my brother got it while walking down the road... I get to hunt twice this year... I get to hunt for regular bull in November and the in January for the Antlerless!!

I got drawn for a MF cow permit too. I have never hunted in Winston, but I am going down to start doing some scouting. Anybody got any areas that they recommend I look into? I would prefer something away from most people and/or behind locked gates.
