Buckrun? What do you know about it?

Been looking through the regs and noticed the Buckrun raffle. I've never really paid attention to it but it peeked my interest. What are the odds of drawing in this unit? How do they have such a long season? Anybody?

Buckrun is a landowner program, they do major habitat improvements and in exchange get permits to sell, raffles to run as well as permits through the state draw and extended seasons.  I've hunted it twice and have had great experiences both times, the raffle would be good but draw odds are pretty tough.  Its only a mule deer affair out there.  Hope that helps.

What is the quality of deer. I need a Mulie bad. I've only shot whiteys and I'd sure like to bag a quality mule deer.

He manages pretty well out there.  There are some dandies.  Good genetics.

I'm thinking about applying as well. I have the application pinned up on my cubicle wall and have been staring at it for a month now. I wasn't able to apply for an out of state this year because of $$ early in the year but have since built the coffers back up. It would be worth the $20 for the opportunity to draw. If not I might buy a over the counter Idaho tag and try that out, any takers?

For $20 the raffle ticket would be well worth the money if a guy drew.  Forget the state tags,those are doe permits, meat hunts,

Yea but you have to wait until Oct 22 to find out if you were drawn and the season is Oct 25-Dec. 31. Would be nice to have more of a warning. Kind of reminds me of the state. Makes planning for hunting here and in other states a pain. Oh well SH*& happens

Yeah I wouldnt put all my mule deer hunting eggs in that basket, thats for sure. By the time you found out about the raffle the general season is over, if you tag out during the general season you are done even if you buy the raffle, kind of tough.

That sure does not seem like a good way to handle the raffle..........They won't allow bow hunters on there place either.

I'm not a bowhunter but that does seem strange. I wonder why?

Probably a waste in time and money.  The country isn't necessarily set up for bowhunting well.  Don't get me wrong, it could be done, its just if you notice they keep their hunts pretty short, as time is money to them.  Having some guy out there messing up their statistics and all......besides, its nice to know that they cater to one sort of thing and if they aren't experineced in the other arena it might be hard to offer a great hunt.  I hope I am making myself clear what I am trying to say.  I've been at work way too long.

Well said Boneaddict, basically when they have hunters out there they want them to harvest game and want them to get it done in a day.  With the open country and bowhunting it would be alot harder to have people be successful then it is with a rifle.  That's why the hunts are only one day long in most instances.

There is no bowhunting because they do not want anyone associated with the raffle or state hunts in there before paying clients.  Raffle hunters are second fiddle to the paying customers, which is understandable.

That's the first thing that caught my eye, that's crazy, it's worse than WDFW normal practices.

My boss has been there like 2 or 3 times and each time he had to settle on  doe.... he wasn't very happy with the unit but I've seen some great bucks  come out of there.  If you can pull a big mulie out of the desert unit areas with as much wide open country that is out there then you are one hell of a hunter!!!! my boss is about 60 and has had 2 back surgeries so that explains it all... big bucks, hard hunting and lots of money even if your drawn!!! thats my understanding... 

  take one of these to shoot all the coyotes you'll see!!!!

while were on the subject of such topics, has anyone applied or drawed  for the merril ring tags up in pyhst?.talked to a fellow who lived there last year during early bow elk and he'd been there twice in 5 years or so and said very big roosevelts lived there. anyone ever been there?

If he wasn't happy, why hunt it numerous times?
