How far does a bow shoot?
« on: June 28, 2011, 01:06:48 AM »
A Mathews Switchback at 60lbs shooting 29 inch Axis Nanos and a 100 grain field tip + a few Miller Lites + a grass airplane landing  field = just under 300 yards.  Has anybody else tried this?  If so, what are your results?   :IBCOOL:

http://www.scottisharchery.org.uk/aboutflight.php

This link is one heck of a good source for "Flight" and "Clout" competition.  It lists records of all user types as well as complete background of each archery sport.  Not many military style competitions in the US anymore.  But Salt Lake used to be the capital of the world in regards to flight and clout shooting.

I always found that the parabolic flight of an arrow gave me better distance at an angle slightly greater than 45 degrees.  Then again those were barreled flight arrows with Schick razorblades for fletching.  Shot out of a bow that would now be about 30 years old if it hadn't blown up when I tried the leg launch competition.  That's where we put stirrups on the bow so we could hold it with our feet and draw them as far as we could.  Guess I took it a bit too far.  Thank you for bringing back some fond memories.

Keep having fun with that bow!  Love my old home town of Tenino!

Interesting site there. I think I may be able to get out past 300 yards. Haha.

Tenino is a great town indeed!

quadrafire - In the one picture on that site you can see the tunnel or cage the arrow is going through.  Should  keep things a little safer they claim.  Most of us back then made similar cages when using the razorblades.  Doesn't help much when your bow blows up though.  Adds to the excitement of the sport I guess.

Sweetland Archery Products in Springfield Oregon used to make points and razor blade mounting hardware for the crude flight arrows.  Same guys that invented the compressed cedar arrow!  The Northwest guys were not only leaders in target archery technology back in the early days.  They were also leading innovators in all aspects of archery.  Possibly only Michigan has had more of an influence on archery than Washington and Oregon.

We have a rich archery heritage here in Oregon and Washington.  Our hunting might not be the greatest in the states.  But, we have a lot to be proud of here.  Can't imagine a better place to be an archer who values history.

Sorry, but I hadn't looked at your link prior to my post. I just did. That is cool stuff. Thanks for sharing. I have read some in the past about "horn bows" with distance shoots, but never really thought about it, as modern day competition.

Yeah, I bet it would be a lot more popular of bows could only shoot 100 yards.  Problem now is there are few places to actually do this kind of shoot.  My flight arrows were only 18" long and less than 3/16" at the barrel.  Need a pretty flat place just to find them let alone handle the distance they travel.  Was one heck of a lot of fun though.  So was archery golf.

Almost impossible to do with a compound bow as "Chipping" is actually "Clout Shooting".  You have to control the cast of the arrow by how far you draw.  With a compound it would be more like "Archery Roulette" which is never a good idea for obvious reasons.  The courses I've played had maximum draw weights of 35# @ 28" draw.  It was really quite a challenge and fun.  Especially when played with a drunk bunch of future "Hall-of Famers"

I've attached a link from Oxford University Company of Archers.  It lists basic rules of golf.  But main reason for the link is the last three games they call "piss-takes".  Be sure to read the disclaimer at the bottom.  Not sure I want to party with these guys.
