My buddy........Buddy
« on: July 04, 2011, 09:07:28 AM »
Here's my new partner, Buddy.   just adopted him from IronMike through the forum.  thanks mike.  i have been looking a long time for a lab like him.  he is even better than i could have imagined.  he is an awesome dog and is adapting well with his new family.  we still have some training to work on, but there is no question he will be a good learner.

Nothing better than to have a new Gun Dog around the house.  Good luck with the training.  Sure you'll both have a lot of fun working out the details.  Congatulations to you both.

hey windygorge hows it going with the new dog?

im ready to kill him....lol.  took him to the lake to go swimming and he took off on me.  caught up with him about 300 yards later.  don't want to woop his a$$ to bad cause we are "bonding".  thuck that.  then i took him to a racing event today and he would not stop barking, no matter what i did to try and stop him, short of beating him.  looking right now at shock collars.  does anyone have any insight on good collars?  i am looking at the elite tek 9898.  it has the barking option, plus its a trainer.   can't have him running off, and can't have him barking uncontrollably in public either.

let me just say that Buddy is awesome.  he is not neutered and when he ran off,i knew he would come back, just didn't know it would have been that long.  there is not a spot he hasn't marked, and when he gets neutered, i hope it helps cure that.  but i heard he will have to be trained, because its a learned habit.

We've used about every shock collar out there.  It really is the safest way to keep your hunting dogs out of trouble.  And their hearing seems to improve greatly as well.  Sportdog was nice, but it did not make it through a year with us.  Same thing with Cabela's and most of the others.  We are finally back to the tried and true Tritonics.  There big, bulky, heavy and work like a dream year after year.  I have not tried their new small ones, but if they are like the old ones they will be winners.  Tritonics has a real good trade-in policy too if you ever want to upgrade.

Good luck!

We run two dog units.  Except for Tritonics one of the collars will stop working within a couple of weeks.  Sport Dog was always good about sending new batteries and that would fix it most of the time.  But within a year at least one of the collars would stop working all together.  They'd work out to about six feet and no further.

We upgrade Tritonics about every five years when the batteries finally go.  All the others stood behind their products, but only Tri... had been trouble free every season every time until the batteries go.  We just decided the smaller ones were just not worth all the trouble.
