Starting to get excited (just a bit) for the pinks this year. Should be another banner year. We will be heading out in the boat for them in the sound and then hope to get some more in the rivers when they get in. Have to hit the vice to tie up some jibs that work wonders on them. Every year its funny watching guys bring down their tacklebox and I show up with a pocket full of jigs and a garbage bag. Here's to a good year!

NOOOOOOOOO...Hate those little beep beep beeep ..they always come and mess up my silver run ...once they hit the river the silver are soooo hard to catch

I'm excited! Except I don't really know much about catching them. I lived in AK as a kid and remember catching pinks, but that was a long time ago. If you don't mind giving me some advice where could a guy catch them and when do they hit the rivers? Thanks for any tips.

I will be catching the hens for their eggs and will not take a single buck. I will smoke the fish and will most likely give all it away or at least give it away for the cost of the smoking.

I cant wait till my favorite spot is filled with pinks...Dont know if we are gonna be in the boat this year but my spot on the stilly always produces

In the salt.... with a down rigger, dodger and small (mini) pink hoochie 30 - 60'. Rivers.... jigs work well. Bring a few different colors, sizes and weights. You can fish em under a float or drift em and give em a little twitch as they drift. Small Spoons and plugs also work. I like using a spinning rod

I love taking my kids to the river for them. They get to actually fish for and catch salmon (non-downrigger). They love it. As stated above, hens with eggs (for silvers & steelhead) and put'em in the smoker.

That is what I do every time they come in. It is the first thing I tell anybody that gets in my boat. Only mortally wounded males make it to the ice chest. This will be the first season for my 3 year old and my 8 year old is driving me nuts asking when we get to go humpy fishin. I guess I cant complain about that though.

We also do a labor day weekend float starting fri afternoon and finishes up mon evening that leaves us all with extremely sore arms.......its a blast to say the least.

I cant wait!!!!

I hate Humpies. They make it way to hard to catch the Chinook that I'll be targeting.

Last run,it didn't matter how anti-Humpy your gear was,or how fast you trolled,you still hooked the slimy *censored*s one after another.

The wife is chompin at the bit waitin for them. She loves catchin them.
I'll take a silver over a humpy anyday, but I gut and gill them immediately and bury them in ice.
They taste better that way.
I only keep the hens when they are bright. Occasionally a buck, but only if it is bright.
Any color and they go back.

You boys give those little guys a bad rap. If you only keep the bright ones, bleed em right away, gut em shortly after and make sure that they are on ice...they make a great dinner. I only smoke em after I freeze em or send em down for halibut.

Kids are getting excited.

We'll fish either the Snohomish close to home or another close river with a 5 wt and floating line. It can be a hoot when a wave comes up the river and you just cast into a pod of fins. It's one time I enjoy the zoo.

If you're going to keep a couple just try to bleed and get on ice ASAP. Don't wait. Or you can eat with a spoon.

they're fun to catch, but i like them even better because they soak up all the pressure and you can get some peace and quiet summer run steelhead fishing.

Anytime I can go and catch decent sized fish damn near every cast and release those sorry suckers for the next smuck downstream, I get excited

. But seriously I enjoy fishing when the pinks run because it adds a lot more action in between catching those silvers and kings....

Trash all over the rivers, pink yarn, pink shrimp, and pink okie drifters in every tree within 20 yards of the river. Watching some people fillet up the really really dark ones, you know the ones that are swimming back downstream

I watched some people keep some so dark they could have been out of a zombie fish movie. I expected fins to fall off as they carried them away.
It is nice to see the rivers full of fish.....to bad they have to be spawned out pinks, instead of chromer silvers, kings and steelhead.

Does anyone know why they increased the pink runs so much instead of say silvers? Cost can't be much more and silvers would be a much better fish

I like them when they are bright, caught out of salt water in July or Aug. I don’t fish for them in the rivers or late in the season.

I hear ya ..I cooked silvers and humps one time at a huge Bq and no one knew the difference ...they were bright but I prefer sockeye steelhead and silvers ..

"They" didn't increase the humpy runs. They are not hatchery fish.

Nobody wants them and the price per pound is so low that the indians and commercials don't even bother with them much.
I don't think any pinks are hatchery, they can spawn almost anywhere in the river I've even seen them spawn in the lower section in the silt, they must have a high survival rate.

Mostly though if they were worth more money there would be a lot less for us.

I was under the impression that they were hatchery fish. At least on the Puyallup system. The state shut down all the hatcheries and the tribal hatchery is pumping out the pinks?

I don't think the tribes (there are a few in that drainage) release any pinks. Everything I could find refers to kings, coho, chums, and steelhead.

I love the pinks. They are a blast to catch on light tackle, and they eat good when they are fresh, bled, gutted and iced. They are great fun for the kids and my fair weather fishing friends and family. I always get excited for them. If anyone wants to go out and fish for them, I'll take you for a good gas donation. I'm not a licenced guide or anything, but I love taking people out who don't get to go out in a boat often. Especially you military guys. I live in Marysville and fish out of Everett. Shoot me a PM if you wanna go and I'll set up a schedule.

We use to catch them off of the dock at the lodge that I worked at in Alaska. A trout rod, 8 pound test, a pink pixie and a cooler of beer made for a fun evening. We tossed all of them back because the place was also infested with big coho.

That's cuz once the cohos hit the river their mouths grow together and the skin fuses them shut!

Man that irritates me when they roll right in front of you but the little B@$tards wont bite!

But I am looking forward to the humpies - they make me feel like I actually know what I'm doing!
