Is this Leupold worth anything?
« on: July 19, 2011, 02:29:43 PM »
I have a Leupold VX II glossy rifle scope that is a 3x9x40. It's sereal number is E022628. I beleive this may be the first year that this scope was produced by Leupold. At one time I found a spot on the Leupold website where you can look up the sereal number to find out what year your scope was produced. I can no longer find it on the website.

Can anyone verify for me if that is still available on the website, and if it was the first production year of the 3x9x40 VX II do you think it would be worth any money as a collectors item?

Thank you

Looks like your scope was manufactured in 1974...

If it is that old then it is not a VX II.  Probably a Vari X II.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

You are correct. It says Vari X II on it.

Check ebay for prices. It would go for $150 to $200 on there, would be my guess, if it's in near perfect condition.

People pay more on ebay for Leupold scopes than anywhere else.

I was hoping it may be worth something as a collectors item. Being the first year that they used the sereal numbers and 37 years old. Thank you.

Sorry to say, its worth what all Vari-x scopes in the same condition are going for.
I had a Leupold 4x westerner NIB from about 1957 and was trying to get $300 for it on e-bay a couple of years ago. Didn't get much interest for that.

Good scope!  Show it some respect and use it if not already.

Thanks for the info guys. I have it mounted on my Pre 64 Winchester model 70 .308 Featherweight. I killed a little buck in eastern Oregon with it last year. The combo still works well. I think I will just keep hunting with it.

:yeah:
I have a 1978 Vari X II on my 1977 Ruger M77.  Still use it today as a second rifle on trips.  Honestly, the best glass I have.  Have not needed to make a scope adjustment on it since I final tuned it in '79 or '80.  That rifle and scope combo has put a lot of meat in the freezer until it went semi-retired a few years back.

It's a nice older scope, still a good one, not worth a whole bunch.
