Problem seeing full scope view
« on: July 10, 2011, 10:34:07 PM »
No matter if I install a scope or have a gunsmith do it, it always seems like I can never get a full view when bringing the rifle up to shoot.  It's always a smaller circle of vision or a quarter is sliced off and I really have to get my eye right up to the glass. But then I have to worry about getting smacked in the eye when I fire. I'm sure there's a good reason for this, I just don't have the experience to fix the problem.

Anyone?

Is the scope the right height for you?  I can't shoot a friend's rifle with the cheekpiece on because the scope is too low for me to see through and only get a partial image.  Other than that, it sounds like it could be an issue with eye relief.  You can usually find the eye relief listed for the make/model.  It usually decreases with the higher powers for variable power scopes.

You shouldn't have that problem if you're using quality scopes.   :dunno:

I am no expert by no means,

But we had a problem with my dads Browning BAR, he would try to look down the scope and have issues seeing well out of it, well after trying this and that we found out that the stock was about 3/4 of an inch too long. we cut it and everything is great now..

it could be any number of things, scope height, eye relief, etc.

I know my go to gun a REM 700 300 RUM, no matter how I throw it up to my eye, it comes out a perfect view, and the one time it didn't it kicked me to remind me that some stuff was off  :chuckle: :chuckle:  Damn that hurt like holy hell

Thanks for your help. I had been thinking it could be the length of the butt because the rifle has a fairly thick buttpad. The scope is a Nikon Monarch so it shouldn't be a quality issue, but it could be.

I'm sure one of the causes suggested will be the correct answer.  Thanks again.

My friend is going through that right now. We figured out that the scope has to be moved on the mount. He couldn't get the scope moved far enough with the rings and has to get a longer mount to move the scope forward. Plus you have the eye adjustment on the scope to make those " black rings " go away by screwing it out till clear. Have you tried that ? Did I say that right ?

not sure on that exact scope, but for some scopes I've had in the past I needed tone down the magnification to extend eye relief some, or allow for a slighly better range of eye relief (if that makes sense).

Is this:
1.  all scopes on all guns?
2.  one scope you have tried on many guns?
3.  any scope you have tried on a particular gun?

monarchs have like 4" of eye relief don't they?

you might be too close.

Just gotta fiddle with it until you find out whether your too high, low, far , or close.

the "cut off quarter" view makes me think it is allignment opposite direction of the cut off quarter.

Today I replaced the two piece bases with a one piece, which should allow me to move the scope closer or further away.  The two piece bases were only 1.5 inches long.  I'm going to take it out Thursday and see if I can get it aligned properly and then sighted in.

Rob:  This particular scope with my Savage 111 '06.  I had another scope/rifle combos in the past that I could never get a full view with, but that was ten + years ago.  I just recently got back into hunting after a long break.

I just looked some of my scopes. I noticed the, ( I hope I describe this so you can understand it ) the rear "tube length" from the front of the eye barrel to the windage and elevation adjustments and the windage and elevation adjustments to the back of the front barrel aren't always the same length. There is not enough forward/backward space to get your correct eye relief because the rings touch the barrels on both ends. I hope I explained this where you kinda get what I'm trying to explain. Maybe one of the other guys can give you a better explanation.

You may want/need more eye relief than what you get from standard bases/rings.

If your solution does not work, look into offset rings.  These allow you to move the scope forward or backwards more than straight rings do.
Look at this link for a conceptual view of what I am talking about:

One factor is the rings do not allow the bell of the scope (42") to slide far enough back to get the scope back where it will allow a full view.  Offset bases or taller rings sound like the rx. Thanks for the great advice.

Put a longer one piece picatinny rail on it. I bet that will solve your problem. That way you can really move your scope.
