Elk at Scatter Creek ?
« on: July 10, 2011, 10:59:33 PM »
On my way home from my family reunion this evening, (Southbound I-5), I looked over at that open field just next to rest area (Scatter Creek) south.
Lo, and behold there were 3 decent 5pt+ Bull Elk standing in it !
I have seen deer there on numerous occasions, but this is the first time I have seen Elk.
I took the next exit, and came back, pulled over on the off-ramp to rest area to try to take some pics, but could not get my damn camera to focus (just bought, and on auto)  :bash:
there were at least 4 Bulls, all brached heading towards the woods.
Anybody else ever seen Elk there?

I haven't seen them there but I'm not surprised. I've seen them a couple miles to the north, on both sides of I-5.

I have never seen elk in that area but i have seen them in areas i would've never expected them to be. Such as the Roy Y. Seen two very nice 5x5's About a mile past the Y, just off of 507. The question is... where did they come from? Kapowsin? Vale? Those are the only two ares i can think of. Either way, They are a long way from where they usually are. Seen elk in Roy itself. Its usually every year, around this time of year. Is it the grass? Ive has them in my front pasture and i am way far from where they normally are. A friend was haying last week in Roy and had 7 cows in the same pasture he was in. Hell, about 5 years ago there was a HUGE 7x7 hit and killed just inside city limits. If i find that old phone i will post pictures. I guess ya never know where you're gonna find these big ole buggers!

Well after this post those bulls will die this year  :chuckle: JK. Then elk have been around there for a long time, they disperse pretty well and cross into alot of private land to the west. I wouldnt waist my time trying to find them during season .

I have little worry that because I said something on here, (and the several 1000 other drivers that might have seen them) that they will have any fear of being in any increased danger come hunting season.
Due to access to area being strictly private, and them all being 3+ years old, they obviously have a relative "safety" area, I tried to figure out where they might travel to by looking at "Google Earth", and they probably go quite a ways in search of cows.

I saw them as I was Southbound, but turned around and drove back to NB rest area, then stopped on off-ramp to rest area shoulder to try and take pictures

Talking about elk where you would never expect them to be.....Try figuring this one out. There is a few elk in the Bremerton watershed. They have even been spotted in the town of Gorst. That blows me away!
