870's are good guns, I've been using mine for 34 years, but I would consider a semi-auto for my daughter if she were into shooting.  Shorter arms can have a bit of a problem with pumping, especially if shooting a 3 1/2" capable gun.

Went with the 870. It was a big hit!!!! Guess I will have to start duck hunting so the son will have someone to hunt with. :chuckle:

Congrats to your son.  My 870 I had to buy from my dad when I was 13 for $50 plus a pair of cross country skis to my mom.   :chuckle:

My son started with a benneli nova 20ga  youth.  A very solid shooting gun, he hits just about everything with it, the problem is in about a year or two he will want a 12ga.  It happened to both my boys, they get power hungry.

870 youth 20ga is a great starter shotie for young person.

My 9 year old shoots a mossberg bantam 20 ga great little gun. Hard to beat the 870 though good pick.
