Why Quality?
« on: July 11, 2011, 10:08:40 PM »
So after getting drawn for the Toutle Quality Archery Tag and spending some time there over the last few weeks scouting can some one fill me in on why it is considered a quality hunt. Is it the fact there is a few animals, not many tags versus a general season, the hunt itself? This is my first time drawing a tag and I am trying to learn as much as I can. Thanks Robby

Any tag that is during the rut is considered a Quality Tag.

I would say they consider it a quality hunt because there is no general season in that GMU, and therefore the number of hunters is very small, compared to general season units. And the number of elk is much higher.

However, if it were up to me, there would be no separate "Quality" category, there would only be a bull category and an antlerless category. I see no reason for a non-quality bull elk category. People can decide for themselves what is a quality hunt. If it's not a quality hunt in my mind, why would I apply for it?

It is definitely a quality tag. It does not have a bunch of 300 inch bulls, but it does have a bunch of bulls and a chance at what some would consider a trophy(me included). The archery hunt allows you to encounter more bulls than some will see in several general season hunts. You have a chance to feel the rush of close encounters and know if you blow it, it's not your last or only chance. It doesn't say trophy hunt, but sometimes the real quality is in the fun you had and the memories you take from the hunt.  Good luck and have fun.
