got a tagged bear. (added a new picture )
« on: July 12, 2011, 01:37:32 PM »
It looks like this new bear in the area has a red tag in his ear. Who or wht do they tag them? Is he a trouble maker or something?

is there any pics of him where the tag is legible?  if so call Game and fish, they may have a history of it.

Red tag means that bear's homosexual.  It must be a fashion thing.  Those genes won't be going anywhere useful.

Nice pics!  Yellow tag is a "call before consuming tag".  Not sure about the red.  Call the regional office or send the pics via email.  I bet you can get a little info on the bear.  There are not many marked.  Sometime bears slip a collar and this could be a bear that did that.  So could be valuable information if so.

He might have been captured and relocated.  Maybe they just want to see where he goes, what area he ranges in, how old he gets to be, etc.  FW might be interested in where he is now, and how healthy he looks.  He looks very healthy!

This one was captured and hard released in my yard the year before. Pretty sure it's the same bear.

Craig,

If you are in the same area as years past then it may not be a new bear, just newly tagged. There has been an on going study in this area for many years.

Contrary to popular belief, there are a lot of tagged bears (both collars & tags) in some areas and most are not trouble makers.

Send me a pm if you want more info or have any questions.

The tag color lets other bears know what gang they are affiliated with. If rival bear gangs are mixing in the area, you might see signs of black bear on black bear violence.

Interesting, did not know that. Considering my tagged bear was captured by my cam over bait she will not be in any danger of being consumed by me this year. I did email  WDFW to the attention of the "bear dude" and maybe I'll hear back if he recognizes my tagged bear by area.

If yellow is "may not be safe to consume" I would want to not mess with a bear that has earned a red tag.

What would a bear eat for it to have a tag that means may not be safe to consume???? How would they know that???? Was that bear one of those FDA testing bears????   :dunno:

From looking at the link it is not what they eat but what they may been given, i.e. drugs during medial care, tranq darts, who knows what. That would be a damn shame to blast buddy bear then have to dicard the meat for fear of contamination. One of the whole whole points of this hunting stuff is good lean and clean meat.

The drugs don't stick around too long I bet he will be fine by the time bear season starts. Its probably had that tag for awhile.

Interesting about calling in a tag to find out if it's safe to eat. I've heard something about bears not being tranquilized and relocated during hunting season because of this issue.
Now how about this question. If you shoot an animal with an ear tag, notch your tag and gut it, then later call and find out it can't be consumed, do you get a new tag?

Yes, you get a new tag.  This has been discussed on this site before.  Like all drugs it takes sometime to metabolize from the system.

I shot a bear with a yellow ear tag a few years ago and yes, I had to call the number on the tag to see if enough time had elapsed that the bear was safe to consume because of the drugs that were administered at time of capture.  They were also interested in where the bear was killed and what he was doing at that time.  They seemed pleased that he was eating berries and "doing what bears should be doing"  Probably a relocated nuisance bear..

Ever get any info on the bear?  Out of all the bears i get on cam every year ive only had 2 with ear tags, one of which had a collar.  Both scrawny little youngsters.  Ive also had one cow elk with collar and tags, and 2 collared wolves.
