Doves around Ellensburg?
« on: September 05, 2011, 01:54:22 PM »
I have to go to Roslyn/Cle Elum this week on business, and I'm debating whether to head up in the surrounding mountains to look for some blue grouse, or keep heading east to Ellensburg looking for doves.  Having lived on the wet side all my life, I've never been on a dove hunt, but would love to try it.  Any suggestions?

I would head farther east if looking for doves in Crab Creek, Matawa area. Early early morning and last few hours of the evening. Look for open fields, water, trees, gravel . Good luck

Get farther East into wheat country and you'll see lots of 'em.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

I put a lot of miles in this weekend down the Columbia from Wenatchee, Quincy, and the Potholes. I didn't see a lot of birds flying and shot even less.  It's been getting down into the low 50s high 40s at night so the birds are moving south. Down near Yakima may still be good or just stick around E'burg and go after Blues.

Thanks guys, this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.  I wish dove hunting was better here in WA.  Guys in other parts of the country are getting limits in an hour.  Sounds like a lot of fun.

Blue grousing with my setter it is then!

Doesn't seem like there are too many around this year. 2 buddies and i got our limits the first day and i went looking around the next day but didn't find much at all. Find wheat fields with roost trees nearby (russian olives) and you should atleast get into a few of them.
