Blacktail lure
« on: July 13, 2011, 02:10:12 PM »
Started thinking about this when looking up articles for rattling blacktails.  Anyone use scents for blacktails?  Every hunting store around here sells a bunch of different lures and very few sell any specifically for blacktails.  You think a BT will be spooked by a generic lure probably made for whitetails?

Wholesale Sports and Sunbirds sell a small variety of blacktail scents.  Dont know if it helps much, but figured it cant hurt.

I have used it several times. I got it wholesale sports. The only time I know it worked was during a late buck hunt, I had a very nice 2 point come almost running in from straight down wind with his nose to the ground. I shot him at about 12 yards in some heavy reprod, he didn't even know I was there until it was to late!

What was the one you used?  I was wondering if anyone tried using the ones that dont specify a species.

I can't count how many times I have been up cutting wood during deer season and look around and there is a deer (sometimes a buck) standing there watching me...

There are blacktail specific scents, but I cant remember the name. Moccasin Joe maybe?

As far as working, I have experienced success while using them. Whether they were a contributing factor who knows I think they work at least some of the time.

My best luck with them has been the last week of October, this is when I think I have seen the most bucks i believed were truly drawn in by the lure alone, during the pre rut when they are in search of receptive does. I think they are more willing to "bite". I have also had success hanging it in a known buck after dark then coming back in the morning, killed 3 bucks this way, however all of them were out of groups, with several bucks and does mixed in. So I also believe the real deal was probably present and the spot was just coincedence.

I think they use the same stuff, rebrand it and stick an expiration date on it. Ive used outdated whitetail urine in late season and had 2 bt bucks follow my foot steps for fifty yards.

Anything to help mask our scent is going to work some. I have seen BT urine in just about every sporting good store down here in Vancouver Wa. Wall Mart, Fred Meyer, Outdoor Warehouse, etc. etc. Hope this helps and good luck this year.

I think any of the scents will the one that lasts the longest is the buck in the rut that the cap came of of and leaked into the defrosters.

I know the stuff I use keeps people away from the truck when I keep the windows up to keep the rain out..

Hmm,,note to self: pour into defroster vents for better distribution

I can tell you that even in the rut, a Blacktail buck will bolt from whitetail in estrus urin. I tried two different brands of whity in two seasons.  But Muley Buck urin during the BT rut will sometimes get a big buck curious. The same may run off the younger bucks.

I use this more as a cover scent than a 'lure'.

I've had the same thing happen with BT piss. Had two does or a doe and a fawn follow my footsteps out of the timber into the cleasr cut, over a couple logs and right to the base of the stump i was perched on. I sprayed it on the bottom of my boots earlier.
