Desert Unit 290 Monster Mulies
« on: July 13, 2011, 06:38:14 PM »
I've been drawn for the November archery buck Hunt. I'm pretty Pumped cause it my first time getting drawn for a special hunt. I was wondering if anyone had any good information about this unit. I've started scouting from the road and have seen some good bucks. I have also considered hunting the south Frenchmen RD refuge? Pretty thick stuff! Does anyone have any good pointers or even a sweet path forward to a nice buck. Look forward to hearing from you desert unit veterans.

Thomas this is what I would do.  Go to that unit and hunt coyotes.  Use your glass to find and pattern bucks from afar.  If you can't hunt coyotes then just go there and use your glass to scout.  The area is fairly open so with some binos and a spotter you should really be able to cover alot of ground with your glass.  Plus the deer wont be pressured so you should be able to find some deer easily and see what type of bucks are in the area.

I would suggest that you get in touch with the local Bio. and see what he has to say. I friend of mine drew a doe tag last year and he ot in touch with the Bio. and went scouting after that.

I've hunted ducks out there for many years.  I drew desert antlerless in 03 and filled it one day.  Your Nov bucks will be in the run, so just find the does

Here's what you do:  Find tall sage habitats...i'm talking sage that is 4 -5ft tall.  This can be found off C street northbounnd into the wildlife area after you cross Frenchman's.  There is also a large doe herd that hangs out backside of the state park and goes into the fields across the highway in the evenings...find their day bed area and you should be in biz!

Another habitat they like is the willow forests of the N. Potholes which you can access off I-90 before Moses Lake.  Find the out of the way spots that are not near duck hunters and have at it!

Good luck.  Great advice given on the coyote hunting/scouting idea.  Need to get familiar with the area and using archery gear you'll need to figure out ambush points and patterns.

Contact the Reg 2 WDFW office. There are 3 different RESERVES and they are NOT on maps. Stay away from the reserves unless you want to be in handcuffs!  The Bio at Reg 2 will give you the info on reserves and more. There is LOTS of huntable land so the reserves should hinder you.  I'll see you out there!  :)
