Chrysler to recall 250,000 Ram pickups

Chrysler is recalling nearly 250,000 Ram pickups because a bad part in the steering system can cause drivers to lose control of the truck. The Ram is Chrysler's top-selling vehicle. The recall covers 242,780 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups from the 2008 to 2011 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said a part near the left front wheel can fracture, and potentially cause crashes. The problem happens mainly at low speeds in tight turns. Chrysler says drivers have reported a few minor crashes and one minor injury. Affected models include 2008-2011 Ram 2500 and 3500 four-wheel-drive pickups and 2008-2011 Ram 3500 two-wheel-drive chassis cabs made from Feb. 14, 2008 through March 28, 2011. Also affected are 2008 Ram 1500 mega cab four-wheel-drive models made from Feb. to August in 2008.

On a kinda serious note, not to start more bashing about dodge, but they sure do not have very high sales figures, yes i see it does not cover the 1500 or 2500 2wd but really how many people buy those, 4 yrs worth and only 242k sold, ford or chev sell more than that in 1 year...

Buckmark ...  I would have thought you'd understand that statement a little better.

The recall covers 242,780 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups from the 2008 to 2011 model years.

The recall affects that many vehicles. That's not saying that's how many were sold. Recalls are very VIN specific....where they were built, build date, etc.  Not all 2008 Ram trucks are affected, just a certain VIN break.
They haven't released any information yet so I can post here when they do. If your truck is affected, you will get a notice in the mail.
It should be ball joints if they want to replace something worth a dang. I never see broken tie rod ends.

I may not have said "Hey, what'd you hit" but I definitely would have asked if she hit something.

Hey, it might not even be a part that Chrysler made.  All manufacturers get parts from sub-contractors/suppliers.  At least they are fixing the problem, and not pulling the liberal attitude that it has to be someone else's fault.  And no, I don't drive a Chrysler product.  But I probably have owned some that were a lot worse, as well as some that were better.

In a  July 6 letter, which was posted this week on the safety agency’s Web site, Chrysler attributed the problem to a tie-rod fracture caused “due to a weakening of the ball stud,” which could occur if there were an alignment problem. Such a failure would affect the steering.

Chrysler said the problem “tends to occur during low-speed, parking-lot type maneuvers when the customer is making a tight turn.”

“There were a few minor accidents and one minor injury,” said Vince Muniga, a Chrysler spokesman, when reached by telephone.

Last December, Chrysler recalled about 15,000 of its heavy-duty 4500 and 5500 Ram pickups from the 2008–11 model years for the same problem. In April, the agency responded to complaints of similar failures from owners of other Ram models and opened a defect investigation.

Still nothing released from Chrysler regarding this recall.

If your girlfriend had to pay for the repair and the recall applies to her truck, Chrysler will reimburse her. Tell her to hang on to the invoice. There will be info on how to submit for reimbursement on the recall notice if/when it arrives.

2010 3/4 ton mega we bought it last August and it broke this spring on her lunch break.
