Anybody got there bow tuned in a hooter shooter?
« on: July 16, 2011, 01:18:42 AM »
Just wondering if I should send my bow to get it "super-tuned" by sending it to the bow rack in springfield OR.  They use a hooter shooter to tune your bow, which eliminates human error.

It would be cool to have it done but I don't like the idea of sending it.  If there was one locally I'd do it.

I had read about it & just happened to have an x-ray job in Springfield. I took my Mathews Drenalin with me. I ended up trading for a Z 7 with a trophy Taker drop away and had it all tuned up.  I couldn't be happier !   When I need strings I am going to find another job down there & get them to put some winners choice strings on & tune up again. I found my whole experience down there to be awesome & left VERY confident in my setup.  I also wouldn't feel comfortable shipping my bow but a lot of people ship them bows from all over the country.  I live in south king Co & wish we had a bow shop close by that instilled the kind of confidence in me that they did. I'm not sure about the drawing part but I know it shoots it.

I had to look it up.

Quote
The Hooter Shooter is a machine that will shoot the bow with perfect form, so that you can really look at the equipment, and identify whether the bow is performing to the level that you want. The Hooter Shooter so closely simulates individuals, that most people can learn to shoot like the machine with the same sight settings.

The Hooter Shooter shoots with such precision that it will place the same arrow into the exact hole at 20 yards. This allows you to really evaluate your equipment, and identify if there is a problem, and if so what it is causing it, make an adjustment, then test to see if the changes you made resolved/improved it. With the Hooter Shooter, you can offer your customer visual, undeniable proof that their bow is performing to the highest level possible.

Q: What is a Hooter Shooter and what can it do?

A: A machine that can shoot most bows with perfect form. So closely simulating an individual without the human variables that a person can learn to shoot like the machine with the same sight settings. The machine shoots with such precision that it will shoot the same arrow into the same hole at 20 yards even on a poorly adjusted bow.

This precision causes any changes in the bow, variations in arrows and arrow rest, variation of release, changes of heel pressure, bow orientation, and draw length to be reflected by where the arrow hits. The Hooter Shooter will shoot most 2 cam and single cam bows using most hand held releases or releases using a wrist strap. However, not the back tension type releases.

"If all your arrows won't use the same hole, then you know for sure it is not the shooter but the equipment that has a problem."

This machine is engineered to shoot a bow the way an archer should with adjustable high/low wrist, universal release holder and unique grip which emulates the human hand. Of what value is it to an archer to know absolutely, if their equipment is the cause or their shooting is the cause for missed shots. With the Hooter Shooter, you can offer your customer visual, undeniable proof that their bow is shooting an arrow in the same arrow hole repeatedly. Are all your arrows flying identically? Now you can test them with unerring accuracy. Is your bow tuned well enough to have broadheads shoot exactly like field tips? With the Hooter Shooter, you will have the tool you need to find out and tune your bow to accomplish the results you desire.

Why?  You should be able to tune your bow by yourself for the most part to hit anything with in reasonable bow range.  I think you will only see the difference at extreme ranges assuming you have perfect form.  But, we all like to play with out equipment.  Maybe you should just make a road trip and watch it done.

However, I still think that you do not need it unless there is something I am missing.  I find that when the arrow does not go where I want it to go 99% of the time it is my fault.

Why?

Why? Well, for the same reason guys need hunting rifles that shoot .25 MOA and for the same reason guys need 3500 Ram trucks with lift kits and 39" tires to drive around Bellevue...because we are gear whore dudes who can't leave anything alone or "good enough"

And because it sounds cool when we tell our buddys that we had it done...

Also the bow rack cleans your bow and lubes up everything (something I'm not confident in doing myself).  They also tune your arrows with your own setup.  I think every bit of accuracy from the get-go will increase my chances of taking my "trophy".  From what I've seen here, I'm gonna send it in.  I'll let you know how it shoots when I get it back.

Problem is that it won't tune the bow to "you". Everyone grips the bow differently. So you will add a different amount of torque to the bow than another shooter or machine. They will get the bow timed and shooting at its optimum, but you may still have to make some minor adjustments to get the bow to shoot to your style.

Brian, two things...
1. Learing to tune you bow is not difficult, just do a search on here for Eastmans Tuning guide. it has everything you need to tune you bow. Tools are simple and cheap.

2. Once you know how to tune your own bow, if anything goes wrong in the field (trip and fall or anything that changes your bow) you can retune or repair it in no time at all ;)

That will be more valuable to you then having someone else tune your bow (without you there)! I believe in an previous post you said you drew the Toutle tag this year (congrats). I would want to be able to take care of my own stuff on a hunt like that ;)

Good luck to you...

the guy is on archerytalk and goes by crackers. i wont say prices but ive paid around the same for a winners choice slapped on my bow. he tunes it and you get a new string/cables.

bows should be tuned to achieve maxium performance not person. how do you tune for torque anyway? :dunno:

i will agree with other people, learn to do it yourself. its acutally kinda fun.

I agree with Button Nubbs, I want my bow as tuned as possible to perfection and then I can work on my form to try to achieve the perfect shot.  I don't really want it tuned to my faulty form.  Ideally you would want an Olympic shooter to shoot for your tuning and then work to achieve their perfection.     I wasn't saying above that this tuning unit is best, I actually went because I heard so much great things about the shop. It was neat to go see it & I had the best customer service / results from my bow I have ever had. Mike

Wayne Endicott owner of The Bow Rack in Springfield is first rate.  If you have the opportuity to have him work on it I'd do it. Even I take my guns to another more experienced gunsmith once in a while.  Nice to do it yourself, but I guarantee he will do it right.  He's an anal retentive SOB and takes a lot of pride in what he does.

We too have a Hooter Shooter here that we use quite a bit to trouble shoot and test with.  It's a good machine even if it is made by SH.  If you ever wanted to know if its you, the bow or your arrows the HootShoot will tell you in quick order.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

You tune for torque by making fine adjustments to the rest.  You don't think  that you will release the arrow the same as I do? You ever shot a bow through paper than have someone else fire an arrow with your bow through paper and see a different tear? Granted I'm not a paper fan. Some bows will show a more drastic difference from shooter to shooter than others.

I had an allegience that was giving me fits.  Took it down to let Rod at wholesale mess with it. We both shot it through paper and got two different tears.  He had me a try a different release and got yet another tear. We held the bow different.  To account for the different amount of torque we applied to the bow.  Adjustments to the rest were necessary. I doubt to many people will be able to release as clean as a machine. But what ever gives you confidence and helps you hit what you are aiming at.

That's funny.  I think she's my future wife.  But seriously folks, I know how to tune my bow, and that is one way of the hundreds that exist.  Just from this post, there are a ton of suggestions.  When you zero your scope on a bench rest, you mechically dial your scope in without much human interference.  Anything else, and you've got breathing, unsteady position, and trigger squeeze to account for.  Same with archery, I take.  Yes, I have the toutle tag this year, and after 5 years with no luck, I want to do whatever is possible to increase my chances before the arrow flies.  It might be an over-achieving thing to do, but so is shooting your bow everyday, but some people swear by it.  From what I read, it'll be $75 well spent.

One other item is when you shoot from your knees or shooting from your knees but bending at your hips you put torque on your wrist thus messing with your accuracy.

This is a good topic!!! I have a huntin partner that started bow huntin later in life and I have watched him go throug the huge curve of bow shooting. If you start out at a young age and develope the skills needed you will likely be a good bow shot.Bow tuning is simple and easy. The problem I see is people relliy on somebody else to make them feel good about there equipment and they head into the woods and wound animals. This is what my partner has done. I try to help as much as I can but some people have to figure it out themselves instead of just listening and keeping it simple stupid (kiss). You can have the most tricked out system and still not succed. That was a lot of two cents!!!!

If you can spare the coin and it makes you feel better. Than ya should do it. The one thing that guys like Wayne will be able do for you is get the most performance out of your bow. Im betting you may still have to make a fine adjustment when you bh tune but you may not. Curious how it pans out for ya.

if your tuning for torque you should be adressing form flaws. :twocents: so my bow is tuned in a hooter shooter yet my bh and fp's have the same poi. if the rest was "tuned" to compensate for torque i doubt that would be the case. agree to disagree on this one, just like you said whatever makes you feel better about it.
