Bear hunting near fish lake and lake wenatchee
« on: August 08, 2011, 09:57:30 PM »
I went bear hunting in this area last year at this time. We seen one smaller bear in between fish lake and lake wenatchee but that was it. We seen some bear crap and paw marks on a dumpster but didnt find another bear. We drove a lot on logging roads (never walked) and searched clear cuts and everything. We even went for a short hike halfway to twin lakes (only cause we had to stop do to winy people i went with). Looked for berries, but i am not an expert at finding them. I am going over there this wednesday and I was wondering if anyone could tell me where some berries would be up there (which roads) and how much of a difference it would make to walk those same roads. I am also pretty good at rabbit distress calls if that makes a difference. I would also like to set out a scouting camera. If anyone knows where to place it that would be great. Anything helps. I will be hunting with a rifle.

My Advice is look into some maps for that area.  I hiked into the glacier peaks wilderness on sunday and there is still alot of snow and the berries are still just starting to grow.  I am not going back until the end of August.  To give you some hope, In 2004 we went up to scout for the high hunt and In one particular area we saw eleven bears in two days and the blue berries we ever so ripe.  Again, look at some maps and get off the roads and away from people.  You can find that area that holds bears.  Goodluck!!

In that area if you are not seeing huckleberries try to find a good population of elderberries.  There are some real good densities down low where you are looking.  The state has had to put a few bear down in that area already this year.  Guess they are getting into camp sites looking for food due to the late start on berries.

That's a good road system over there.  Keep driving the roads looking for scat piles.  When you find a good number in an area tear them apart and get a good understanding of their food choice at this time.  Then you will really know which food source to be concentrating on.  You will be into the bear then and all you have to do is find a perch above some good feed and be patient.  A lot of bear in there - you should be successful with a bit of persistence and proper scouting.

If you run into a guy up there called "Crazy Larry" that's my hunting partner.  Don't believe a single word he says!  He's probably been on the crack pipe and having fantasies about sheep about then.  He does pack one heck of a wet bar in that trailer though.

Good luck!

That bear must have been eating out behind Crazy Larry's camp!  Did you find blue shop towels in that scat too?  I know that's his BW of choice when campin' in the woods :o.

You will definitely have better luck hiking the trails. Drive along Chiwawa river road and park at the trailheads and hike up hill in the mornings till you get into a fairly open area. Do a lot of glassing. Then if you score it's a down hill drag. A lot of bears over there. Good luck.
