San Juans Fishin/Crabbin
« on: July 18, 2011, 01:46:21 PM »
Went up to the San Juans again this weekend for the Area 7 crab opener and then try to get a King while the pots soaked. Once again no freakin fish to be had...  :bash:

I got up there Friday afternoon and got the pots in the water but didnt have time to get into the fishing, went to bed late so I didnt feel like getting up early to fish the incoming tide. So I spent most of Saturday pulling pots, cleaning, and cooking crab and didnt get out to fish. FC came up and met me up there but we didnt fish until Sunday. Got up at 0400 and probably got to our 1st fishing spot in Thatcher's Pass around 0500 or so by the time I had coffee, breakfast and the boat gassed & loaded. Fished Thatchers and around Decatur Head for about 3 hours and got nothing but a dogfish, didnt see anyone else catching either. Then we were going to move over to Tide Pt - but nature called and someone couldnt ignore it.... (we had the why didnt you go before we got out here - didnt have to go then discussion.... Just like a kid  I tell ya....  :chuckle:

Anyway, we head back to the cabin for a quick pit stop and so I decided to check the pots and by the time we pulled them and got all the crab in - which took a 2nd trip back to the cabin to get another bucket, always a good thing no?  - and baited & dropped them, it was getting too late to head back out to fish, since I had a few other things to do. But when I came back on Sunday I talked to the fish counter at the dock and he said he hadnt checked in one king (or salmon) all day. SO I said how everyone has been saying SJ Islands have been smoking hot & all that and he says it had been. The day before, on saturday, when I was too lazy to get up and go fishing, he checked in 19 kings! (out of 34 boats, pretty much one every other boat, not bad really) SO of course, once again, story of my fishing life, always a day, week, hour late and miss the hot streak. SON OF A FARGIN BASTAGE I TELL YA!!  :bash:  :bash:  :bash:

Now crabbin - thats a different story... Pretty much limited out 5 cards every day in 2 1/2 days except for Friday came up a total 5 short out of 4 cards pretty much, no complaints at all. All in all, we brought home 55 dungeness and about 6 red rock crab. Not bad for 2 half days (fri & sun) and one full day of crabbing (sat) huh? All nice crab too. I dont think we kept many - if any - under 6 1/2" and tossed back several legal keepers for bigger ones. We had many 7 inchers and few that were 7 1/2 and almost 8 inches, and all were fat, clean & hard shells. Here is a couple pics after I started cleaning crab from my 1st pots pulled on Friday evening - I think out of the 1st pull I had around 15 nice keepers. They were all big crab but for some reason they look alot bigger in person!  :chuckle: I didnt take any pictures of the entire keep after the end of the weekend but trust me, we had a few huge piles of crab! Now if I could just catch a damn chinook up there!  :bash:

Believe me, a ten minute ride back to the cabin is well worth avoiding me defiling your boat  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Thanks again, it was a lot of fun!

What launch was the fish checker at?

I know for sure of at least 5 kings that went through Cornet Bay and 3 to Washington Park on Sunday.

Thanks guys - we had a great time and did really well for sure. The checker was at Washington Park, I saw him around 1630. Maybe he said 'a few' but after I said "it sucked" when he asked me how was our fishing and he said 'yeah the fishing was crap' - and told me the sat numbers, I thought I heard him say he counted none for the day.  :dunno:  At least that's what I heard. I'm not a real good listener either.....  :chuckle:

Yeah, I guess 10 min was not worth violating the ol Naut So Fast, especially since she treats us so good. But technically it was 10min there & then 20min back and with me anything out of the way in the slightest may as well be 4 hours! HA HA  :chuckle: Plus from the numbers I think we would have just been wasting gas! No big deal anyway, you know I just needed something new to flip you $h!t about since I've about worn out the story about you falling asleep and having to shoot the ky-oat for ya!!! :chuckle:

Yea that is interesting. The counts only logged 4 fish for that day. I guess they can't get every boat that comes in.  :dunno:

Here are some more pics that FC took of the Saturday sunset from our dock, the Sunday sunrise from Thatcher's Pass, and a pic of one of the typical crabbies we got.
