he's looking at me!!!
« on: July 21, 2011, 11:46:06 AM »
i have a quick question,  did any of you guys have problems whith your dog turning to look at you when you give the "woah" command when the dog is on point?

when my dog would go on point,.. and i'm far back, i gave him the woah command so he wouldn't creep.  he holds point very good, i've never had a time where he would break point, but i sarted giving him the woah comman, just in case he wanted to creep.

so when i give the woah command,.. he turn his head to look at me, then goes back on point,..  is this normal?

he doesn't do it anymore, but he did it for a while,  but after lots of practice, he stopped doing it,..

my question is why did he do this?
is it because he wasn't sure about what he was pointing at, or was it maybe because he was just getting used to the cammand while on point?
i just want to know for future reference, so i know what i'm dealing with,.. and know how to work with it.

I would stop talking to the dog while its on point. If he creeps launch the bird (hopefully you have access to them) and then if he moves give the command. A dog that looks slowly back at you while you are quietly approaching out of the corner of his eyes is a sign of a cooperative dog.

thanks shannon,   yes i do have acess to birds, and launcher.  so far i don't have a problem with him creeping,   he sometimes (very rarely) creeps up on a pigeon in a launcher, but i've never had him so much as creep hlf a step on a wild bird,  he is solid like a rock with wild birds.   :dunno:  maybe a different smell?  :dunno:

i agree.   i need to put him on wild birds more often.  pigeons and a launcher aren't even close to a wild bird.
